Rusty VanWetzinga to the portal

Still funny, considering Large is done, and that just leaves him and Miller. So did his brother the DL recruit sign his LOI? He's a 2025 recruit. I have to wonder if some of these guys have been told by the staff to look at other options. This was the week they were going to start planning how to get down to the new 105 total number....

I wonder if he was told that he likely wouldn't make the 105 player cut. That wouldn't make a ton of sense since he has played already some this year, but maybe Lester is planning on very little fullback action from here on out. It was interesting listening to Barnes yesterday. He basically said that everybody is invited back for spring ball, but that they have been brutally honest with every player about where they stand and how it is likely better for some players to hit the portal now.

I think y'all should read the kid's post. He mentions a "system change", so it appears Iowa offense under Tim Lester is moving away from fullbacks.

And he isn't good enough to play LB at Iowa. That room is full of D1 talent.

Interesting that he lists himself as "Linebacker/Fullback" ...we do have openings at LB heading into next year.
Yeah, but Iowa thought he was a better fit at FB, so it's unlikely he would see time over Sharar, Harrell, Rexroth, Twedt, Montgomery, Van Kekerix, Weisskopf, Buffington, Ries, Cooney, Gautcher, or even Telander and DeLong. He is probably making the right call by transferring. I just hope he finds a good situation and hopefully at a D1 school. Seems like a good kid.

"I grew up playing football with Rusty," VanWetzinga said. "He was really a leader on the field and he really got on me when I missed plays and stuff. He'd help me get focused. I think it'd be a really neat experience to go play college football with him."

At least 1 imo...plus they typically make pretty good ST guys.

The way that Lester utilized the position was to use a TE/FB hybrid, and with the roster limit that unfortunately made Rusty expendable.

Hope he finds a home somewhere and gets to play.

What does a FB give you that a TE doesn't? If you want a backfield blocker, line the TE up there for certain plays.

We didn’t use one much at all this year. I kinda like a lead back at times but it’s definitely a position that isn’t used much anymore.
That’s what pulling offensive linemen are for…….
