After 2 complete pig skin seasons, good or bad for the B10?

For marketing they've been a wonderful addition. For everything else besides men's basketball their addition has been horrendous

Men's and Women's Basketball has been greatly upgraded. As for football, Maryland will put some decent teams on the field once in awhile. I suspect once Rutgers gets their house in order, they will be able to build the football program back up. It wasn't that long ago they were sending teams to bowl games when Greg Schiano(sp?) was the coach.

I do agree that 14 team are way too many for any conference. I would like to see each conference with 10 teams and play round-robin in football and play each team twice in basketball. Then you have a true conference champion and eliminate the need for a conference championship game. Then you could increase the total regular season games from 12 to 13 giving each team an opportunity to schedule 4 non-conference opponents. I'm sure the SEC teams could find at least 2 or 3 FCS teams to play.

I like 14 and would not mind 16. My preference would be less non-con games and more conference games especially in bball. Get rid of the pointless W's over the Coppin States of the world. Really like the new geographic rivalry layout in football via the East - West.

I believe Rutgers can be reformed in athletics over time as they get the infusion of cash that is coming. They have some solid football players and have had some good football teams in the past. There's access to talent in that region. They need a facilities upgrade in bball but need the money first to pay down old debt.

I really like the Maryland add for exposure in the DC market. That was big. I would bet this will be reason for the ACC folding in time. I noticed Marylanders have a little bit of an attitude but I think I time they are going to really appreciate the B1G. They have some potential to build facilities, etc when they also get the infusion of dollars. They are a good bball addition already.

I will even admit that I like having Nebraska in the conference. They fit from a geographical rivalry sense. This game is getting more intense with each passing year so that's great.

All-in-all the footprint spreading, especially into big markets, is a good thing for the B1G given the economics of this business.

I've heard so many people talking about them during that time...they went to some bowl games. So did Iowa State. So did Bowling Green and Toledo. They've finished in the top 25 ONE time in the last 30 years. That's pretty ****ing bad. Now they're back to being themselves and not even playing in a Detroit bowl game anymore.

If the bean counters say that having a worthless Rutgers team is financially smart because of their location, so be it. But as far as their football program, they make the Big Ten MUCH, MUCH weaker.

You realize some teams actually lose? You could put the top 14 in the nation in one conference and some of those teams are going to have bad records. When is the last time someone said that's a really good 3 win team'so that league is strong .... Except the SEC!

By the way, Rutgers was 8-5 last year and beat UNC in a bowl game 40-21. Same team going to the ACC conference championship game this year.

They had a bad year this year but they are not Kansas bad, in fact they beat them. They beat Indiana in a shoot out and blew a big lead on Maryland. Their D was really, really bad.

For those who actually care about academics and recognize that the Big 10 is about more than just athletics .... you quickly discover that Maryland and Rutgers are perfect academic fits for the Big 10. In fact, they are much better fits than Nebraska.

While some midwesterners take issue with folks from the coasts ... I have absolutely no problem with the addition of the 2 schools. If the Big 10 had to expand, the fulfilled most of their objectives with the given additions. Maryland is a decent fit in basketball.

Also, with regard to recruiting, it's a big positive to get New Jersey and Maryland more firmly in the Big 10 footprint. Most top kids in SEC territory want to go to SEC teams. Most top kids in Texas want to go to Big 12 teams (Texas IS Big 12 territory, right?). Similarly, most kids who grow up in Big 10 territory end up wanting to play for Big 10 teams. Oregon is one of the few teams that buck that trend ... with all the Nike propaganda bringing about a lot of "born again" Oregon fans. However, apart from a few exceptions, the aforementioned trend tends to hold.

I don't really care about the B1G footprint or the BTN or money. What's that matter to me? All I care about are the games on the field / rivalries. And with 14 teams we play our rivals less. And now with nine conference games there's no such thing as interesting non-conference games.

Thumbsdown.jpeg. I don't dislike the schools. Too many teams in one conference. Should be twelve max.

I've been happy with both of them and I'll throw in Nebraska as well. With that said, I don't think we should even consider adding more teams for at least the next 20 years or more and I do like going to 9 conference games so we play the east division teams more often.

As an aside, Big Ten Network was a great idea too and the programming is top notch. BTN Live has surpassed college game day as my top source of football hype and analysis.
