Nice update on Ryan Kriener. A whole lot of rebounds! Did anyone go to any of these games mentioned? Sounds like a force on the glass. Any updates would be appreciated.

Ryan Kriener led his team to three wins this past week. First, on Tuesday, he had 27 points and 14 rebounds in Spirit Lake's 72-37 win over Spencer. Then, on Friday, Kriener scored 19 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in a 74-58 win over LeMars. Finally, on Saturday, Kriener had 25 points and 18 rebounds in a 69-37 win over Sioux City North. For the season, Kriener is averaging 20.9 points and 11.7 rebounds per game for Spirit Lake (9-2).

IDK nice rebound totals but maybe the 30-40 point margins of victory was indicative of the level of competition? I think he will need some time to develop at Iowa but it appears he has the hustle gene and that is more than half the battle IMO.

They probably won't see much until they get to state. I would like to see stats when he is playing against another big.

I posted the following on an older thread this morning, but decided to move it here instead. Kriener was named the Sioux City Journal's athlete of the week, and in the article his coach had this to say:
"When he plays hard and he plays low, he's exceptional at defense. He can shut anybody down in the paint. He has worked hard on his lateral movement. His perimeter defense has improved significantly. He's always been a great passer. He can always score on the block. He was taught well. He has great footwork. He has a pull-up jumper that is exceptional. He has the spin move. That's stuff the big college basketball players can do and he can (do) that right now."
Plenty of hyperbole to go around, I'm sure, but it's nice to hear.

More importantly, how much of the game did he play? Did he do that in three quarters, or is his coach one that will let him play the whole game to pad his stats? Not so much Le Mars, that was a 'close' game, but the other two he should have been out of the game with 6:00 to go in the 4th.

Can you add the link, I would love to read the whole article. Thanks.

LaFrentz put up gaudy stats vs bad competition. nobody doubted his abilities. also Raef played for a small school in IA, so why the doubt about Krieners ability, one thing that is being missed is that Kriener qualified for the State Track Meet in the High Jump.

to be a High Jumper you have to be a very good Athlete and excellent leg strength. to do the High jump, what I can find when he was 6'9 his Dr told him he was still growing and this was a couple months ago, since then he has grown to 6'10, also he has a current wing span of 7'2. not the wing span of Olaseni @ 7'3, but it is longer than Woodbury who was 7'1 @ 6'11.

Is Spirit Lake good enough to make state? They haven't really beaten anyone.

its not who you beat when it comes to the State Playoff as everybody starts from scratch, it starts with Regions then Districts the sub state before the State finals begin. so what you posted is null and void.

I understand your point but I wasn't saying that making the state tournament is based on record and who they beat in the regular season. I was simply asking if they were good enough to make state, a question that is relevant considering they do not play that tough of a schedule to determine how good they are.

They destroyed Spencer last week.
I'm sorry, I honestly do not know if Spencer is good. Yes, they only have two losses, but records nin high school basketball can be very misleading, no? I remember Wahlert had a low seed in the state tournament last season as returning champs due to their record (they played the toughest schedule in the state), and they won the whole thing with a margin of victory of at least 8 points through the 3 games at state.

Also, Western Christian, who lost in the 2A state quarterfinals last year, beat Spirit Lake by 30 points.

I hope Spirit Lake gets to state out of that tough substate area. They deserve a shot at the title.

Yet you seem to know everything else?

Spirit Lake also played HWC early in the season breaking in some new guys and just off of playing for State Championship in Football. Team had not had much time together, the Christmas Break has really helped them, yet they are still battling some injuries but Kriener and Brown are a good duo.

I will say this, that when they played Estherville and won by around 30 he was left in right up to the end of the game. I also noticed that the score keepers quit posting his points on the player board half way through the 4th. I do know he ended up with 30 in that game against a weak under sized team.

2432Hawk, where do I act like I know everything else? I said I don't know if Spencer is any good because I have never seen them play, and I haven't seen Spirit Lake play. I think it is true that high school records can be misleading; that's my opinion. I didn't mean to come across as arrogant.

Always has been...probably always will be... The presumption that if a kid is from Iowa, he's not among the elite. Ryan Bowen, Greg Bruner, Collison, are the first that come to mind. Many, many others.....unless a power school is recruiting, of course

agreed when I think of the combination of Cook at PF and Kriener @ center it makes me get excited for the next 4 years.

Just checked E-vile game on Hudl. Kriener was out early in 4th quarter, he was out early in both Spencer and SC North game as well. Around 5 or 6 minute mark in all 3.

Nice wingspan. From an old video it looked like he barely had to jump to dunk the ball. That good.

Does he have any new videos out?

They thought they could lose the spencer and LeMars games. The coaches had a come to Jesus meeting with the team and then left them alone in the gym for an hour and a half to figure it out. It must have worked, seems like they have their mojo back.

Spencer is solid this season, I'm shocked they lost to Spirit Lake by that much. Must just be a bad matchup for them.

Spencer has a couple 6'6" kids getting a lot of D2 attention. TJ Rushing and Tony Roe (prep hoops Iowa)who scout all the Iowa talent have spoken very highly of the two since last summers AAU season. Very strong team.

Spencer was hammering some so-so teams early on, and hung with Hull WC pretty well on their court I think, and faded a bit late. I am very surprised they looked so bad against Spirit Lake for sure, but they rebounded and beat undefeated #10 Algona by 10 in Spencer (last night I believe).

3a district one has 6 of 8 teams who have been rated in the top 10 this year. Currently 4 of the teams are rated. Looking at Iowa Preps mid season all-state teams 10 of the top 24 individual players are from district one. It appears are high percentage of individual talent and teams come from district one in Northwest Iowa.

Apparently Algona has been beating up on easy teams in Central Iowa with their 9-0 record. Spirit Lake beat Spencer by 35 last week and then Spencer beats Undefeated Algona by 13. Interesting to see if IHSAA splits up the talented teams in NW Iowa.
