Sam Cook named Iowa athlete of the year

Cool honor. Just curious who votes for that or what the criteria is? How big is this kid?

I'm not sure how tall he is or if he's very fast, but.........if there's any Iowa kid that ever looked like a fullback this would be him.

Runs extremely hard and has an very impress highlight reel. I have heard he is only between 5'8 and 5'9. This is what held him from getting offers.

From what I have seen and heard he has decent speed but he is a downhill, power runner. With his size I am not sure he would be a Big Ten caliber running back. However if he is able to put on 10 -15 lbs, he could definitely pave the way for Eno.

Based on the article, it sounds like this kid is a gamer who, as Hayden used to say, has that "extra heartbeat" that comes with playing for your home state school. Sam sounds like a kid who will not only fit into but help perpetuate the winning-the-right-way culture that has been built in Iowa City. In fact, I'd be willing to bet the young man ends up on scholarship by this time next year. Can't go wrong with Iowa kids like Sam Cook.

Not sure of the accuracy, but the article claims him to be 5'10" 215lbs. That is about the same size as Brad Rodgers was. How fast is he?
He is 5'8. 215 is probably correct. He has decent speed but not running back speed or the shiftiness either. Not fast enough for defensive back or big enough for linebacker. I just question whether he can put on another 25 pounds to play fullback.

At that size, I just don't see him making it. Like so many Iowa kids I suspect he will walk on and enjoy the experience so he can say he was there and move on to a small college

There is NOTHING about this guy's history that says he won't be successful. Elite wrestler, with division 1 scholarships. I suspect he is as tough as nails and will bust through the line and de-cleat a few LBers as a very effective FB. They said Sam Mills was "too short" to play LB in the NFL, too.

I am glad this guy is on our team. I think he is 'nails' and made of pig iron.

It is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

He looks to have that football mindset and I suspect he will make some waves for us. What if all he ever does is be the 2nd coming of Jaime Murphy "The Irish Car Bomb" on punt and kickoff returns? I'll take it!

4 year starter for Ft Dodge and all he did was run OVER people. IIRC he was their whole offenses and defenses knew he was coming. Got stronger as the game went on. I guess we should get someone on here who played against him or coached against him in the CIML and see what they have to say.

Here in DSM the Friday night highlights were rightfully focused on WDM Valley, Dowling and Waukee. But when it came to Ft Dodge highlights the sports anchors were usually saying, "Sam Cook doing what Sam Cook does best." while showing a highlight of him following his blockers, running over tacklers and getting to the end zone.

Sam Cook plays bigger than 5'8 & 215.

Not sure if I am more excited about him or the QB from Pella walking on. Both of these guys are football players. They will make an impact. I am sure of it.

What is pig iron?

pig iron
noun
1.
crude iron produced in a blast furnace and poured into moulds in preparation for making wrought iron, steels, alloys, etc

Mostly, I remember Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) saying Rocky was made of pig iron in the 4th Rocky movie after he became frustrated that his punches he was landing weren't phasing him.

I appreciate the info on what it is because I really had no idea. As far as rocky goes, I have seen that one about 30 times and at no point does drago call him pig iron.

Using my memory to recall these things is clearly a bad idea. "The vault" has a leak.

Nile Kinnick- 5ft 8 in, 167 lbs. Where would he play college football in today's world?

Cook is 5'9" 211. Iowa needs to look at him in two lights. 1. kick/punt returner 2. fullback if 15 pounds of muscle can be obtained. He is quick, can take a hit and runs downhill.

After all this fascinating banter I'm going w/ fullback. I still hope for the day when we get another guy at FB w/ the production of Jeremy Allen. That safety valve pass to Allen was sick! If we could have that every year in our offensive arsenal we would convert like 90% of 3rd downs.

I can go back further in the Hayden Fry era when our Fullback was a serious weapon running the ball. Owen Gill had that Quick-hitter right up the gut that usually went 4+ yards and often got a lot more. There was a FB towards the end of Fry's tenure named, Kuhl or Kohl ... he was a man among boys, too. Kirk had to be the OL coach during the Owen Gill days, didn't he? Surprised it (that dive play) isn't in the arsenal more.

Right. Thank you. He was the real deal. IIRC there were games toward the end of the season that he was our only offense. Still usually got 4+ yards per carry.

Anyway, I keep wishing we would bring that quick-hitter to the FB back into the rotation of play calls, but I suspect I will continue to wait...Give these hard-hitting FBs a bone, for crying out loud.
