Sam Stoll Article

It is fair, I would expect one to hate another by which they have been dominated, and expect to be dominated into the foreseeable future. If Iowa doesn't get G. Stevenson, I hope he plays football. But if he must go to another Big 10 School, I am fine with it being MN. We will never fear you, but good competition is welcomed.

This makes me think of the "It's ok, we hate you too" t-shirts. Minny use to be on those shirts now they are replaced with tOSU. Minny will be lucky to finish in top half of BIGS.

That is not the case for wrestling, but yes for other sports. You say embarrassing, I find humor in it. The Who hates Iowa chant was started during my wedding reception. My reception was in Iowa haha.

If you have to start a chant about something like this, that's called pure jealousy. I honestly would never even think about doing that, whether I hate something or not. It's like you're our little sister...Pretty sad if you ask me.

That's a lie. At the national duals in Minneapolis, the Minnesota fans were chanting who hates Iowa when they were wrestling some other team.
I wasn't there so sorry that was off my radar. Iowa was at least in the building though.

At a single dual meet against a non Iowa opponent I have never heard The Who hates Iowa chant. I have heard it against Iowa. Again just sharing my experience, it may have happened in the past.

This thread makes me sad. I love The Who, and it's both disappointing and perplexing that they hate Iowa. Are you sure it wasn't just Keith Moon?

Gopher fans did it again last nite in MBB.
Real dickish under anyone's interpretation. Dumb pricks that give a bad name to the entire fan base.

Let's be clear here. The student section did this and not the other 15K fans. Not condoning it but we have a tough time stopping them from doing it unfortunately. I removed 3 people last night for telling the ref to F off after a bad call only because I was there and saw them do it. Try and stop 3K students from starting a chant. It's not easy.

Broke up a fight between a fan and one of the Iowa assistants also. Coach lost temper going to locker room and got in the fans face right in front of me.

We also had a Iowa fan with a heart attack that I hope is ok today. Paramedics did a hell of job bringing her back to life in the stairwell. Prayers for her

Bottom line is I agree with you. It's uncalled for and gives all the fans a black eye

Gopher fans have accepted being Buckys bitch but have yet to accept being Herkys bitch so they are holding onto that chant as long as they can.

They should have chanted their love to the refs last night instead of their hate towards iowa.

I live in these parts and I can tell you from my perspective this is entirely true. They pretty much hate The Sconnies, largely because they've been kicking their tail in Football and Hoops for quite a stretch (probably some Hockey in there somewhere, which I presume is more even). Iowa gives them Kirk, who calls off the dogs when he can, instead of Bielema who lets the dogs out (pun intended) and says stop of us if you can, regardless of score. They've got the Iowa chant and it isn't going anywhere. No biggy.

I went to the last game at Kinnick North (The Metrodome) with a Gopher co-worker who had season tickets. While we were tailgating prior to the game, they all gathered round the only Iowa guy around (me), and gave me "the who hates Iowa" chant. All in fun, as far as I could tell! When the noise stopped, I replied to all within hearing distance.............. "you're going to hate us a lot more in about 3 hours!". I couldn't have been more correct.

I'm sure many of you know what happened that day, but here's a paragraph summarizing the days events:

"The Gophers took the field that day, and absorbed the single-worst beating that the Gopher football program has taken in a conference game in its history. Allow me to emphasize that again. The Gophers were one of the seven founding members of the Big Ten Conference back in 1896. They have played football in the Big Ten Conference ever since then. And in the first 112 years of playing Big Ten football, they had never lost to a conference opponent by 55 points. . .until this game. I understand that the Gophers were happy to get out of the Metrodome and everything, but this was ridiculous".

55-0 on the last day of The Dome.

So they like to chant. Let'em.

I know this is off topic but I went to the big ten finals last year and it was my first time in Iowa. Carver is a must on a bucket list if your a wrestling fan, enjoyed where I stayed and liked the restaurants I ate at. I thought the campus architecture was interesting to view and the campus was very easy to get around. However, I went to the book store to buy gifts for my family and while there I notice a shirt that has a picture of the state of Iowa but the writing in it said "it's not Ohio" can some explain the reference of this? I don't get it, what did I fail to grasp from that shirt?

I mean shouldn't have said " at least it's not Ohio"?

It's only a reference to the fact that the states' names are similar. As a kid, I used to have a t-shirt that said, "The University of Iowa -- Idaho City, Ohio". Same kind of thing.

There's no deeper meaning than that. . . except for the fact that Iowa is clearly superior to Ohio.

Haha....I am not going to let you draw me into a battle between which state is better(I will never win the argument on this board) but I thank you for the answer.

People seem to have a blind spot in their brains for the state of Iowa.

I have had both reactions from people.

Oh.... you grew up in Idaho where you grow potatoes..........

NO....... I grew up in Iowa, Toledo Iowa.

Oh.......Ohio. Toledo Ohio.

Silly people........

Ben Pherson, the reporter who interviewed Stoll, does a great job covering Southeast Minnesota wrestling in Rochester, a predominately hockey/basketball town in the winter. He absolutely loves the Clash tournament and is there every year for the entire event.

Knowing Ben a little, his depiction of him dishing it out and Stoll giving it right back is accurate.

Gilman’s comeback is a hot topic right now. Had this interview taken place a few weeks down the road, Stoll might not have even mentioned it. Given the timing, Stoll had a very quick, very funny comeback!
If I remember correctly a couple of years ago Ben tweeted after a loss by an Iowa wrestler at nationals "who hates Iowa". Iowa kid wasn't even wrestling a mn kid. I like the fact he brings attention to wrestling in southeast MN and is very knowlegable about wrestling but have disliked the guy since I saw that.
