Some have tried to suggest the Same Sex Marriage Bill that will be voted on this week is unnecessary because the legality of same sex and interracial marriage is not at risk. This email I received says it most definitely is:
Today, the U.S. Senate will hold a crucial vote on the so-called Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 8404). At stake is not only the definition of marriage in law, but the ability of Americans to live out their beliefs without legal penalties.
Will you join your voice with thousands of others, and call Senator Joni Ernst today? We’ve provided a quick and easy script of what to say when you call.
Hundreds of Americans who believe that marriage is between one man and one woman are already being harassed with lawsuits. Millions more are being silenced. Today, it's time to stand up and speak out.
To pass the bill, Democrats need ten Republicans to join them. Twelve Republicans, including Senator Ernst, voted two weeks ago to advance the bill. If she and just two others insist on religious liberty protections as a precondition for voting for it again today, they could force a vote on a rigorous religious liberty amendment being offered by Senator Lee of Utah.
Over the weekend, several Republicans who voted to advance the bill indicated they support a religious liberty amendment. But expressing support for a religious liberty amendment is not enough: They need to insist on it before today’s crucial vote.
Will you call Senator Ernst today?
Sincerely,
