Some have tried to suggest the Same Sex Marriage Bill that will be voted on this week is unnecessary because the legality of same sex and interracial marriage is not at risk. This email I received says it most definitely is:

Today, the U.S. Senate will hold a crucial vote on the so-called Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 8404). At stake is not only the definition of marriage in law, but the ability of Americans to live out their beliefs without legal penalties.

Will you join your voice with thousands of others, and call Senator Joni Ernst today? We’ve provided a quick and easy script of what to say when you call.

Hundreds of Americans who believe that marriage is between one man and one woman are already being harassed with lawsuits. Millions more are being silenced. Today, it's time to stand up and speak out.

To pass the bill, Democrats need ten Republicans to join them. Twelve Republicans, including Senator Ernst, voted two weeks ago to advance the bill. If she and just two others insist on religious liberty protections as a precondition for voting for it again today, they could force a vote on a rigorous religious liberty amendment being offered by Senator Lee of Utah.

Over the weekend, several Republicans who voted to advance the bill indicated they support a religious liberty amendment. But expressing support for a religious liberty amendment is not enough: They need to insist on it before today’s crucial vote.

Will you call Senator Ernst today?

Sincerely,

Thing is, no matter what is in the bill, so long as it legally allows same sex marriage, a significant number of GQPs will be against it.

I saw ads this weekend from the Heritage Foundation. They fear it will lead to litigation or the removal of tax exempt status against religious organizations who won't want to adhere to the bill's provisions.

That’s their fear mongering. They know damn well the tax exempt statuses of churches isn’t going away any time soon. I know the gop pretends all Christians vote Republican but the fact is that America is still over 63% practicing Christian’s and then another 7-10% are of other organized religions that benefit from tax exempt statuses. If 70+% of Americans can be told ‘hey they’re after us’ that’s a problem. no politician is making it a top of the list item and having that much instant negativity.

Or, since you seem to be missing it, maybe that's to protect those who have won lawsuits preventing them from being forced to serve events they would otherwise choose not to serve (which has nothing to do with two people getting married)

The religious liberty laws are still out there, buttmunch. You can still refuse service to gays if you’re scared of them. Christians love to play the victim constantly.

WTF are you talking about?

Can anybody explain why any Rs would oppose this beyond the obvious?

B/C they are stuck in the 1950s mindset. The party has retreated into that Decade's retro mentality.

Racism
Bigotry
Nationalism
Anti-everthing
Pro-nothing

Combine this with the Freedom Caucus's refusal to govern and its exacerbated extremism and we have the formula for at least 2 years of legislative inaction and disruption.
