Same substitution pattern every game

I blame Fran and Perkins for the loss. Fran has 4 bigs and one guard - Perkins for about 3-5 minutes. Perkins letss Dembele bring the ball down one time. Next time Payton brought it down I think twice. And then the other forward brought it down the next time. Where the heck was Perkins. Also he was running around near the basket with the others dribbling around out top and none of them can beat there man, so never near open. Sort of took about a 4 minute rest while on the court.

From a poster on TOS that highlights one of the issues we've been speaking of tonight..

"1st half Dix hits a jumper at the 13 minute mark to make it 19-13. He was 3/3 with 7 points and a steal at that point.

So it was perfect timing to take him out, along with Tony for Bowen and Pat - puke. A minute later freeman gets his second at 12:00 and he sits for the remainder of the half.

Penn St quickly turns a 6 point deficit into an 8 point lead. Just awful game management honestly."

Yup, the guy nailed it ^^^^ ...

This is what happens when Fran tries to cram his son into the lineup.

Fran really isn't a good in game coaching. Sigh.
He's always been questionable with rotation management. Sometimes it works but other times it's disastrous. I'm always concerned with his rotations though because I can recall it costing us games every year.

Freeman’s foul was because of pmac.

Turnovers simply killed the Hawks last night - rotations may be a part of that but it was also a lot of individual knucklehead decisions. And of course, lack of defense.

Hawks shoot 56% for the game, 90% from the line and lose by 10?

Cut the turnovers in half and it's a W.

Freeman finished the game with 2 fouls and played 26 min---so he sat out that 12 mins where the lead was given up for no reason.

Dix played 22 min---he's only averaging 20 min/game on the season. I think he's the best perimeter defender we have along with Perkins.

Fran puts out a lineup with 4 forwards and only 1 guard and they still can't rebound very well and turned the ball over too much.

Lots of mistakes in this game. I suppose Iowa could suddenly get hot but seems more likely a losing B1G record.

Next year, we still don't have enough guards that are athletic/can get a basket on their own/can shoot the 3ball at high efficiency. We have some good players---but not the right mix and Fran has some crazy lineups. Next year he won't have to fit in 22-25 min per game for Pmac. Pmac had good scoring game, but he's not hitting 3pt shots this year and his defense/rebounding is issue when playing with Payton Sandfort and Krikke that also
aren't great at defense.

Far too many turnovers caused by the physical play of Penn State,.. still a winnable game at the end though.

Didn't get to see game. Didn't we lose 2 guys to injury?
We lost 2 guys to Frans 2 and 3 foul required benching. Freeman and Dix both banished to the deep bench, limiting their minutes. Therefore voluntarily reducing there minutes, intentionally limiting their production, even though they are w of the 3 most productively players.

Heard Dix and Sandfort went out hurt. Sandfort's shoulder and Dix's ankle (?). Both were back at the end so it couldn't have been too bad

I was scratching my head a lot during the game. Especially when Dembelle was bringing the ball up the court, called for a travel. wtf man? Put a point guard in to bring the ball up. Fran doesn’t teach the value of each possession.

Frans talk about positionless bball is not working with this team. Having a lineup with Perkins as the only ball handler late in the game along with 3 guys that can’t guard anyone on the perimeter sunk us. Dix is going to be a really nice player for us, but if he’s our best defensive stopper we’re in trouble. Bowen and Harding are giving us absolutely nothing at the moment. Bowen looks to be the next guy to transfer. Harding gets absolutely bullied on the defensive end on every possession he’s in a pick and roll. 33 points in the last 8 minutes for Penn St. PMac is so laughably bad on defense I’m just not even sure what to say. It’s brutal to be honest.

What would happen if Fran left a player in after he got his 2nd foul in the first half?

Armageddon? What does Fran know that he's not telling us?

What does Fran know that he's not telling us?
Maybe something about coaching basketball. Maybe it's a way to get younger guys in the lineup, you foul, you are coming out and we'll try someone else. Fran has forgotten more basketball than we know. He's not perfect, he frustrates me too but I think overall, he's good for Iowa basketball and will get better when his boys have moved on.

Lots of coaches bench guys with 2 fouls in the first half, but I don't know how many of them keep them on the bench for the rest of the half every single time.

If Freeman has 2 fouls, as a freshman he may not do anything on the floor anyway - afraid to pick up a 3rd.

But, till the next coach, we will never find out.

I wasn’t trying to be literal about what Fran knows in context of his knowledge of the end of days.

And I’m not questioning his breadth of basketball knowledge. But he’s also not infallible.

I only wonder why that 2 foul rule is such an absolute. He must have his reason. Has he ever commented on why?

The other night, Caitlin picked up her second foul. Bluder pulled her but put her back in in the second quarter and she had a strong finish to the half, and helped create some separation from Penn State. It just seems to me that there is a level of trust you can place in your players, particularly the upperclassmen, to be smart, but still be effective. But, I’m not the head coach so I only have a forum like this to express an opinion.

So you're saying that there's no place on Iowa's roster for someone that is 6 feet tall. Blaming Harding for every basket that the opposition makes on him is nuts. Brock, if you even watch, plays excellent defense and if you go through Iowa's roster no one is a lock down defensive player. Heck, Krikke and Patrick are some of the worse defensive players in D1 basketball that starts or plays heavy minutes. Just admit it, you really just don't like Iowa basketball or you hate Fran and nothing pleases you, but look on the bright side, less then a month to go before the end of the season. That should make you happy.

My pet peeve and I’ve read others mention it to. Fran notoriously plays starters first 8 min and so many times like psu game in that 8-12 min mark in halves we have 3-4 bench players in and where other teams cut into or extend the lead. That and isn’t willing to pull a guy few min early like freeman after 1st foul then gets 2nd with 10-11 min and sits rest of the half.

Frans sub patterns been told by someone connected to program based off “feel” and no method to his madness.
