BERKELEY, Calif. -- Chris Borland,
one of the NFL's top rookies this past season, told "Outside the Lines"
on Monday that he is retiring because of concerns about the long-term
effects of repetitive head trauma.

Borland, 24, said he notified
the 49ers on Friday. He said he made his decision after consulting with
family members, concussion researchers, friends and current and former
teammates, as well as studying what is known about the relationship
between football and neurodegenerative disease.

"I just honestly
want to do what's best for my health," Borland told "Outside the Lines."
"From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think
it's worth the risk."

I saw that the only two concussions he's ever had was in an 8th grad soccer game and once as a sophomore in high school during a football game. He played at Wisconsin for 4 years and one year in the NFL without having another concussion. This just seems fishy to me. First Patrick Willis retires now Chris Borland. Certainly a stomach punch to the 49ers losing two LBs in about a week. Not sure what's going on out there.

Pro Football has become more violent with 325 lb
linemen on both offense and defense. Together
with steroid usage the guys are going to get killed
someday. Football injuries to the head will make
parents think twice about encouraging their sons
to play high school football.

Bottom Line: The Golden Age of Football is over.

I'm already encouraging my grandson to not play football.

Lute, this is the first "bottom line" I've agreed with 100%. I love football, but it won't be the same in 10-20 years. Golden age has passed, even though current to fits still don't show that.
