Satellite camps are back on - KF won't be happy

I have a Michigan grad where I work and he was giving me crap about KF was against them because he's lazy and don't want to work for recruits.

I told him if KF has a problem with this it will have nothing to do with not wanting to recruit. It will have everything to do with the negative pitfalls that will no doubt come from this.

Personally I don't really care. Have them, don't have them.

I don't think the SEC was worried about shady recruiting. They just have no desire to put a camp in Michigan like MIchigan would in Florida so to speak.

The NCAA caved to pressure by the SEC which established the ban. I heard a couple high profile attorneys got involved and the NCAA realized they were going to look like complete fools which reversed the ban. The stupid ban was going to hurt the kids the worst, most who can't afford to travel all over the country attending camps. Heck, 90% of the kids that attend these camps are not D1 prospects and were simply going to these camps to receive good coaching. The NCAA and SEC are a joke!

Kirk and his staff participate in plenty of satellite camps. But Kirk will say things in the media that aren't entirely true.

I believe they attend non-university sponsored camps. He's against universities holding their own camps outside their neighborhood.

There were so many unintended consequences that were going to pop up if they kept the ban. Good move. To be honest ban or no ban don't see it really effecting Iowa.

What a defeatist attitude.

Get out there and rep your brand, Hawks. You'll never be sexier than you are right now coming off that 12-0 season.

The fact that the Capt is against this idea of satellite camps is entirely laughable. Iowa should be chomping at the bit to find every skill position player in southeast and west coast that will listen to their recruiting pitch. Programs in the midwest need this more than anyone.

SMH...c'mon, Kirk.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz was one of the only Big Ten coaches against satellite camps, saying he prefers working with kids on his campus and avoiding events potentially run by third parties

I'd rather have kids on the campus, get more eyes on the players, they get to see the campus and Iowa facility. Yeah the reach is greater if you head south, east or west. But the kids don't get to see what you have to offer..

If KF doesn't like them he can just send Brian and some of the other guys to run the camp.

With kids committing earlier and earlier, you have to allow these to give the B1G a chance at those kids in the South. Unfortunately it favors Michigan and Ohio State more than Iowa. Costs of recruiting will soar. Those with the most money will win.

This is a great thing for northern schools but the coaches and admin need to embrace it. Nothing bad can come from getting Iowa's brand out in front of a bunch of really good players. It helps out the BIG a ton and makes the SEC/ACC have to work a lot harder to get some of these players.

You can't honestly believe he doesn't like them because he'd have to travel?

I would have no problem that is exactly what he believes. Many still think of him as a fat cat that loves to give fans the finger.

We'd be sexier with a national title. The NCAA does owe us one.

Because he avoids recruiting visits? Because he would never up and move one practice session 2 hours away?

I still haven't seen where these camps actually benefit the northern teams. In theory they could but really what good does it do ISU to have a camp in Texas? is some 4/5 star Texas kid going to go to ISU now just because some coaches were there for a camp? Same with Iowa. Iowa needs to get kids on campus to be successful and build relationships.

You're right, ISU is not going to beat out Texas, A&M, Baylor, TCU for a high school kid in Texas. But there are plenty of high school guys from Texas every year who don't get offers from one of the big in-state schools. That could put ISU (or Iowa, or whomever is showing up in the state) as a viable option for more kids.

In Iowa's case, Atlanta might be an option for a camp. Iowa offered something like 30+ kids in Georgia over the last 2 years, and yet to land one. Iowa is very unlikely to beat out Georgia or GA Tech for a Georgia kid, but what about a Georgia kid with an offer from NC State or Virginia?

The northern schools have to get the foot in the door in the south. The demographics in the north just are not trending in the B1G's favor. Population in B1G footprint states is stagnant/receding compared to the south/west. Not only that, the average age of the population in the B1G footprint is trending older. Fewer high school kids as a portion of the population compared to the south/west. The talent disparity will only continue to worsen. B1G schools must get their names in new places to stay relevant.

But they are already recruiting those kids and those areas. That's what I am saying. They visit with the high schools/coaches and it hasn't been shown that these camps are helping get kids any better than what they are already doing. They are more likely to beat out a recruit if they get them on campus. That's why I think for Iowa and earlier official visit is more important than a satellite camp

Umm no they don't.

These camps have the potential to start becoming like the AAU circuit in basketball. Lots of hangs on, 'guardians' etc.

Iowa will be participating in a sattelite camp in Birmingham, AL..3-4 other Power 5 schools will also participate in this upcoming camp. Date is June 11th for this camp.
