Why not try a massive campaign to knock out rhinos all over their range, cut off their horns, and (if necessary) replace them with prosthetic horns? I don't really know enough about rhino horn growth, but if that would work, wouldn't that put a huge damper on the poaching trade?

Apparently there are around 29,000 rhinos in the wild today.

35 Javan rhinos left

5 Northern White Rhinos...1 male

These guys risk their lives to protect it.

You know what would fix this? Change the name of the Washington Redskins to the Washington Rhinos and breed them as mascots. I see lots of upside.

Yep, than people would care.
Or be upset. You'd risk losing a lot of Republicans who hate RHINOs. And you'd risk losing a lot of Dems because RHINOs are stil Republicans, after all.

Then again, they wouldn't be the first team fans love to boo. That's a recognized religion in the City of Brotherly Love.

Some clever PR firm will sell tickets with ads like "Come out and BOO those damn RHINOs!"

It depends on what species of rhino you are discussing. The black rhino which is the a smaller species and the much more aggressive of the species is near extinction everywhere on the African continent. Hunting these at any level is illegal and their protection is heavily enforced. The northern white rhino is also almost completely extinct. The main reason for their extinction was caused by the civil war in the Sudan and South Sudan. They were killed whole sale by both factions of that conflict and their horns sold to fund the conflict. They were basically the blood diamonds of that war.

The southern white rhino however is hunted legally in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwa and Kenya and the populations have exploded in growth the last 10 years due to herd management efforts. You could also hunt them in Botswana up until January 2014. However that country has placed a commercial hunting moratorium on all animals for the next few years to rebuild wildlife populations. Indigenous hunting is still allowed for sustenance purposes.

In certain areas in South Africa the white rhino population has actually grown to some dangerous levels and the numbers of rhino attack deaths is on a sharp rise so hunting in those certain areas is strongly encouraged. The southern white rhino is one of the African Big-5 for trophy hunters. I took my rhino on my last trip to South Africa.

To the OP, in areas where poaching is an issue, horns are often sawed off to eliminate the financial value to poachers.

In general the rhino population in Africa is as strong as it has been since the 1950s. Unfortunately the problems with poaching exist in countries that have high political corruption like Zimbabwa.

Anyone who wants to commercially hunt in Africa, I strongly recommend avoiding Zimbabwa. even when you are dealing with a reputable hunting safari outfit, their is always some two-bit government agent with his hand out demanding some consideration for what you have already paid to do legally.
