Shaka Smart (VCU) was the hottest mid major coach aside from Brad Stevens (Butler) after taking VCU to the final four. He was young and played an exciting style. Nobody doubted his ability as a coach. He got hired by Texas in 2015. This is his 5th season and his overall record at Texas is barely above .500. in 5 seasons, they will have made the ncaa tournament just twice, losing in the first round both times. They are currently 8-10 in conference play and as shown in the link, NOBODY goes to their home games.

Makes ya think a bit doesnt it. We should be VERY pleased with where Iowa is under Fran McCaffrey. The comparison to Shaka Smart at Texas isnt even an argument. And Texas is a much easier school to recruit elite level talent. After seeing this, I have a little more appreciation today.

Smart has been able to pull in a lot of high level talent, but they leave for the NBA before the team wins. 4 guys have left early to be 1st rd draft picks. Also had their top scorer get leukemia, which is terrible for the player and then team couldnt replace his scoring.

The template to win is with players that stick around 3-5 years. I cant fault any coach for recruiting guys that could leave early, but it's tough to win with them unless your roster includes some older guys too.

Let's also remember last year wasnt the best for Fran and many wanted him gone. The whole slient contract extension in November 2018 and then Fran's public feud with Gary Dolphin.....both had a lot of Hawk fans pissed off.

Being at TX is the main reason Smart can recruit so well. Winning consistently with that talent has not happened.

Completely agree, built in advantage at TX.

Fran and his staff would love those high tier recruits. He has to rely on developing guys. Garza has been huge in that regard. If he doesnt turn into the dominating player that he is, Iowa's season isnt any where close to what it is.

Their point would be more believable if there were shots during the actual game rather than before it started.
