Shatel: Former Hawkeyes Erik Chinander, Bob Diaco aren’t birds of a feather

At the end of the season we will find out why Nebraska sucked on defense last year. Most think it was lack of talent but it can be explained in two words: Bob Diaco

That's why they won 9 games (6 in the BIG).

Big fan of Chinander. He would be good for any program let alone Nebraska. Very big upgrade from Diaco.

Pin it all on Diaco if you want but Nebraska surrendered 40 vs. Iowa the year before Diaco arrived and, frankly, Iowa could have easily added another 1-2 TDs but Ferentz called off the dogs.

One word Culture.....they were soft. Both sides of the ball up front were not good. To win in the B10 you better be really good upfront or it will be a long year

Ya Iowa beat us pretty bad but as far as points given up on defense in 2016 it was close between Iowa and Nebraska ( not counting pick-sixes as a result of the offense). Iowa had 245 points scored against the defense and Nebraska had 251 points scored against the defense. It was much wider in 2017 under Diaco in all respects. And it's even still a wash after Penn State called off the dogs. So ya I will pin it on Diaco.

Who recruited the talent? Hard to coach a turd of a program.

Lack of talent???? Pretty sure Nebby has been #1 recruiting class in big10 west every single year! Lack of toughness is probably a better term.....not sure if that changes with Frost. Stupid NCAA making silly rules about having academic standards and stundent-athletes that know how to read before being admitted. Funny how these rules and Nebby’s slow demise from 1996 to present day are slow closely correlated.

Since when is 9 wins good enough for you zealots? I think you still owe about a million bucks to the guy you fired for going 9-3 and finishing second in the West. If Big-Dick Scottie produces 9-3 seasons, how long will it take for him to go from being the messiah to being the guy that wasn't really a Husker and let his girlfriend get beat up?

Defense got progressively softer each season under Riley, and 2017 was down right embarrassing. I don't think it can get any worse -- part of the optimism for this 2018 season.

2015 was probably Riley's best team. Gave Iowa a pretty good game even with armpunt throwing interceptions directly to defenders.
