I think the problem for them is IF they fire Mike Riley, who will replace him? There's already 10 FBS Head coaching jobs open and it's November 2nd. They could be stuck in mediocrity for awhile.

Dear Husker Family,

Good morning.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to every Husker fan who has come to Memorial Stadium this season to cheer on the Big Red; who has traveled hundreds or thousands of miles to proudly wear the red and white in visiting stadiums; and who has passionately supported our student-athletes, our head coach, our assistant coaches and staff. Your support and patience as Mike Riley rebuilds our storied program one brick at a time mean the world to our young men, our staff and our university.

While many are understandably disappointed in the current record of the football team and the heartbreakingly close losses we have suffered, I am confident the future is bright because I see it in the eyes of our players, coaches and staff and I am impressed by what I know is going on behind the scenes. Our coaches are developing our student-athletes and, though the consistent victories are not there yet, I am confident they will come. I have witnessed how our young men battle every day in practice and fight to the finish on game days in the face of great adversity. Football can be a humbling game of inches and seconds and our players have laid everything on the line while making no excuses. The prospective student-athletes looking to make Nebraska home possess athletic talent, academic potential, and high character making for a bright future. Coach Riley has a vision and a plan and is committed to providing the Husker faithful with a sustained winner which will compete annually for championships.

As I have said many times, it is an honor and privilege to represent Nebraska, and I am humbled and care deeply about the men and women I have a chance to work with every day here. The incredible amount of hours they put in and the sacrifices they all make to represent Nebraska are truly remarkable. In two decades as a student-athlete and athletics administrator, I have had the opportunity to learn and work alongside some incredible people at five different institutions. What the best administrators and coaches have in common is a consistent commitment to teaching young minds to do things the right way and to instill a values system that emphasizes hard work, discipline, loyalty, teamwork, compassion and excellence. Those principles coupled with a positive attitude generally result in championships.

Your continued support is what makes Nebraska special and together, we will do great things. Thank you again for your incredible passion and support. We look forward to another home sellout and an electric environment on Saturday as we come together to cheer on our team against Michigan State.

Have a great week and Go Big Red!

Why is that dumb? These things take time do they not? Reilly was the best coach he could find that was interested in the program. The Nebby fans are petulant and so much so that Bo told them to go eff themselves.

I’m sorry but to me it is nothing more than a montage of cliché dribble.

Perhaps because you don't "rebuild" from consistent 9 and 10 win seasons. You remodel a little. Maybe add a nice family room addition on to the back of the place. But rebuilding is what has been taking place at Minnesota and Illinois and Penn State. Nebraska fired Pelini and hired Riley to ELEVATE the program to the next level, not to REBUILD something that was already mostly built.

It'd be like a landlord tearing down a perfectly nice and completely functional apartment building...and then telling all of the tenants to be patient as the new management company rebuilds the fabulous structure back to its glory brick by brick.

The reason "rebuilding" is even in his lexicon is SOLELY due to what has transpired on the field this year. Pelini did not leave a program in disarray. Riley and this season's results have artificially created a sense of rebuilding where none existed prior.

Before the season started not one person internal or external to the Nebraska program was routinely talking about 2015 as a rebuilding project. They were talked about as co-Big Ten West favorites with Wisconsin. So perhaps that is why some of us find the use of that terminology now to be disingenuous at best, and downright dumb/dishonest at worst.

They can't fire Riley this year - No other coach would take that job if he knew he would only get 1 year to "turn it around".

Only in Nebraska does the AD have to send out a letter to fans apologizing for them sucking. The sooner they accept that they just will never be as good as they were 20 years ago the better. The suicide hotline is probably heating up over there.

Beautifully said Doodle. Beautiful. I tried to condense that with my previous comment,
"I’m sorry but to me it is nothing more than a montage of cliché dribble". You explained it with perfect eloquence.

Put another way, Eichorst is a dead man walking!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The year very much is a rebuilding year. Nebraska lost Ameer and Bell, both of whom were all time greats for us. The system is completely different, and the attitude is now different as well. We have differences in opinion when it comes to the coaching staff amongst our players also.
I'm not giving up hope right now. Not yet.

No arguments there, and right now that leads us to believe that we are between a rock and a semi truck that is slowly pushing towards the rock.

Wine? Beer? Whiskey? Really, what are you drinking?

(Just had to say that, sorry. You do have a point, but as an old man who lived the pre-Fry days, I just can't tell you how much fun this is. Nothing lasts forever. You'll be back some day. Thanks for letting us enjoy this improbable season.)

This from Big Sean last year after firing Pelini following a comeback win over Iowa (QC Times):

"In a news conference Sunday to discuss the firing of Bo Pelini as Nebraska’s football coach, athletics director Shawn Eichorst said the Cornhuskers’ rally from a 24-7 deficit to win in overtime at Iowa on Friday played on a small role in his decision.
He also said he didn’t consider the Iowa program to be on the same level with the program he heads.
“Our kids showed great character and resiliency in a tough environment,’’ Eichorst said. “So, it did play a factor, but in the final analysis I had to evaluate where Iowa was.’’
Eichorst said he attempted to determine who the championship-caliber football teams that Nebraska played and he concluded that Iowa wasn’t among them."

Good for Nebraska. The program that used to mock teams like Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern and Iowa IS "on that same level", just with a much smaller population base and no nearby recruiting mecca. Iowa will take 8 - 0 any day over 3 and 6 though Sean....

Umm...I haven't looked in a little while but don't we still have to play them in their kitchen? And don't they still have some talent and ability on their roster or did that all leave in the last few weeks.
I expect a tough and difficult game from them and see no reason to mock them just yet.

I hope they NEVER fire that idiot!!!!!!!!!!!

HEY SHAWN.........HOW 'BOUT ADDING 14,000 "MOOOORE" SEATS?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope the Eichorst comments from last November in which he took a shot at Iowa recycle their way through the football meeting rooms this year the week of the heroes game. Pretty sure Iowa will have enough to play for but this guy overloaded his ass with his mouth...hope the Hawks paddle his ass in Lincoln.

That's guy's ridiculous. Damage control letter to fans 9 games into his new coaches Tenure? He f'd up to begin with the hire and he knows it. Everyone knew it.

The irony is that an impatient fan-base wanted a successful coach fired, leading them to hire a guy with a less-than-stellar record because nobody else wanted to deal with their fans. Now, they can't fire the guy even though the team is horrible because it will bring even more instability to the program, while things look bad and there are no positive signs on the horizon.

What a mess!

His comments on Iowa last year, Iowa with the possibility of heading into Indy with a chance for the Final 4, Nebby's team having quit on the year.....that could be a huge recipe for disaster for Nebby. It could be very ugly

The fact that he is even in a position to where he has to write them a letter to calm them down tells what a bunch of obnoxious, whiney asses their fans are.

You do realize every program in America had to replace players and most are replacing players much better than Ameer and Bell.....do not get me wrong I am sitting back and enjoying watching the dumpster fire take place....but hey maybe you can go home after school and watch some reruns of saved by the bell and relive the glory days

You guys better finish. You've had a great season so far, but you better beat Nebraska in Lincoln otherwise everything is for not.

So if we go into Lincoln with at 11-0 record and lose and end up 11-1 it is all for not? Sorry but unlike Nebby and ISU that game is not our bowl game. We could very well lose the game, which would suck, but I mean it is at Lincoln, Nebby will have nothing to lose bc their season is a dumpster fire, and on top of that we have a short week to prepare for the game while Nebby has a bye week prior to that.....either way Nebby is home for Christmas while Iowa is prepping for the Big Ten Title game and News years Bowl....I think we are all going to have to get used to this reality

You guys are having a great run, and it is going to be fun for your fan base to head to the Big 10 title game. I'll give you that. It will be a bit sour though if you can't beat NU. I'd feel the same way if it was reversed. It'd be all good and a lot of positives, but if you are 11-0 and get picked off by Nebraska that would definitely hurt your playoff chances and that would hurt bad. As far as your last point, I'm not sure we have to get used to any reality. This is the first time you will have gone to the Big 10 title game. Kirk is good for a few good seasons, but soon you will be 4-8 again screaming to can him, just like last year when you went 7-6. Iowa is in a better spot today as we speak, but we will see what the future holds.

Hell, no matter the Iowa opponent there is a segment of fans who think that the opponent for that particular week will be a tough and difficult game.

Completely agree, if we lose any game we are out of playoffs that is for sure. My best friend is a Husker diehard and it has been very tough on him.....that being said our fanbase has been there before (2012 was horrible) and I am just trying to enjoy the hell out of this year and at the same time give my Nebby friends and foes a hard time because I have had to deal with the reverse scenario for a long time

To be fair, it is a bit of a rebuilding job for Riley. Pelini was pretty fortunate (lucky) to have won nine games in each of his years at the helm. His recruiting was horrendous (his best teams were made up of Bill Callahan recruits) and he really fostered a pretty negative attitude throughout the program. Riley needs to rebuild the mentality within the football program, and he needs to rebuild the roster with proper athletes. Nebraska should have an edge athletically over a team like Purdue.....they did not and if you look at the recruiting rankings of the players on both sides of the field Saturday, it will show it.

Riley may not be the guy for the job, time will tell. But Bo Pelini had to go.

I have heard the same of Bo.

THIS. While many are making good points (Ol Doddle included) - It was only a matter of time before the Pelini program imploded. Yes he had talent on his team, but it tended to be concentrated into just a few players, and the number of those players had been decreasing the last few years. You really noticed it when one of them went down during a game and suddently that whole leg of their game would completely collapse. With difficulties getting the most out of the rest of the squad and the personality issues, even if Bo had stayed, he would have found himself in the same situation that Riley is in now. And it is a position the Hawks have been in - losing those close games instead of winning, not getting even recruits that are even average for your program, etc.

Not sure what Riley's recruitment chops are or will be, but he certainly strikes one as having the demeanor to put a strong structure in place. Problem is that type of structure doesn't develop from nothing (which is what he started with) overnight.

Riley does not strike me as smart. He looks like a dumb dog who has lost his bone.
