Hi men,

I was buttoning my shirt the other day and I got quite a ribbing because I buttoned from bottom to top. After canvassing some friends it appears I may be in the minority on this so I figured I would take it to the Hawkeye Report Off Topic Community.

Do you button your shirts top to bottom or bottom to top? Germane to the topic, an additional question: do you refer to the shirt itself as a button up or button down shirt?

I look forward to the results and I hope you all have a very pleasant New Year.

Regards,
Ron

The ladies generally prefer that I only button the lower two or three buttons, so they can more easily run their fingers thru the hair on my chest. So, it's easier to start from the bottom, otherwise I might get them misaligned.

Of course it's top to bottom and that also goes for when it's time to unbutton your shirt.

Random. Sometimes from the top, sometimes form the bottom, sometime I start in the middle.

I can't say that this has been a prescribed ritual for me.

In answer to your second question:

“Button up shirt” is simply a shirt with buttons. Not a pullover.

“Button down shirt” is a shirt with button collars

Top>bottom on dress shirts. I button bottom>up on polos, if there's 3 buttons. If there's only 2 I only button the bottom one because I'm not a psycho who buttons the top button on a polo.

I’ve never heard or seen anyone start from the bottom. That’s effing weird. And more difficult to align.

I can’t see my top button unless I’m standing in front of a mirror in order to make sure they’re lined up. But I can easily see my bottom button. So it’s easier to start at the bottom.

It’s a minimal advantage, but it is a bit easier. That said, my technique is pretty random.

Lemme guess, you are a dirty M1er, you like Hawaiian pizza, and you like almond joy. You also hang toilet paper in an improper underhanded fashion.

I guess I get that, but I don’t think I’ve not been standing in front of a mirror while dressing in decades.

I noticed while "studying" certain posts in the Salma Hayek thread that she unbuttons her shirt from the top down, and I believe I do the same putting on or taking off shirts. I'll go back and verify my study before publishing to the scientific community.

How did I miss this @Ron Kapieson thread? Jeez, I must have been drunk for a few days.

Regardless, as to your question Ron, I'm a top to bottom buttoner and I unbutton in that same direction as well.

I hope you are well Ron and that you haven't lost your HROT password again. The search function indicates that this was the last thread you posted in here.

Regards,
Obviously Oblivious

I can't think of the last time I wore a shirt with buttons. Thanks to Covid I work remote so they are just lucky if I put on pants.

I oftentimes wear a tie requiring that I button the top button on my dress shirts. However, when I button my shirts, I start at the second button from the top and then work my way down the shirt. Then, I go back and button the top button. Not sure why.
This. I do the same thing. I also don't put my tie on until the very very last thing I do, sometimes right before I head out the door.

It's been over 10 years since I had to dress like a monkey for the bank folk. So happy to be business casual now.
