Short's Burger and Shine is returning to downtown Iowa City.

After shutting its doors in April, Short's announced its comeback this week with a sidewalk sign reading: "We are reopening soon. Now hiring!"

Kevin Perez, Short's co-owner, said the business is aiming to reopen around July 27 after undergoing renovations over the past three months.

"We had a good 14-year run and it just needed a big facelift," Perez said. "We pulled all the tables and chairs out, repainted, cleaned and caulked everything."

The building, 18 S. Clinton St., was also repaired after years of water damage. Perez said that involved work on the kitchen, flooring, walls, lighting and chairs.

"We've just been in there cleaning the whole thing up," Perez said.

Short’s Burger Eastside on Westbury Drive in Iowa City and Short’s Burger and Shine-Marion remained open during the downtown location's closing. Perez said the locations helped maintain the business while work occurred on the flagship Clinton Street building.

The menu has been simplified due to a lack of employees, Perez said. Short's is looking to hire 20-25 people by mid-August to solidify normal business hours, he said.
