For Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, tearing down a pro-Packers banner prior to yesterday’s game was about defending his home.

For the fan, it was an act he wants to be compensated for, even though the rules precluded him from displaying it in the first place.

According to Paul Woolverton of the Fayetteville Observer, the fan said he wants his banner back, and was righteously indignant about it.

“I was just shocked, shocked,” Mike Dobs said. “It went from a fun event to I was disgusted.”

Dobs said he paid $500 for the banner which read “North Carolina Cheesehead,” and threatened to take further action against the Panthers if they don’t make it right in 48 hours.

But if they consult their own policies, they should probably tell him to take a hike.

The team’s banner and flag policy clearly prohibits Dobs from hanging the banner over the railing of the lower deck, where it was easy for Newton to snatch, saying: “No banners or flags expressing support of visiting teams may be affixed to or displayed on any surface. Hand held signs or posters that are in compliance with the balance of this policy are acceptable.”

“We were on the front row, over there by the goalposts, and we wanted our grandkids to see us on TV,” Dobs said. “We thought he was going to sign our banner — we were happy to see him — and he ripped it out of our hands.”

Why they thought he might have done that, since they were there to cheer against him, is unclear — far less clear than the policy that prohibited them from displaying it in the first place.

I would think reproduction of the Green Bay logo without express permission of the league and the team is illegal, too.

He should have tried to hang that thing off the front of the famed 700 section of the old Vet in Philly.

I assume this is just Pepsi and he forgot what state he lived in?

He broke the stadium rules but I'll bet dollars to donuts he will be reimbursed for the sign by the Panthers.

They have the right to ask him to remove the sign, but do they have the right to just take it from him?

He should be compensated for it as it wasn't Newton's place to do this and that's frankly not how you should handle the situation. And if the Panthers organization feels so inclined, they should attach the check to a note barring him from the stadium or any other decision they make due to his violation of the rules. But they won't do that.

Yet another immature move by Newton.

What are some other ones?

He's had actions at least back to his times at Auburn, just actions of immaturity. I don't know about prior to that as I didn't know who he was prior to it. First one I recall is there was an ESPN story where the coaching staff gave players popsicles in the Auburn article and he took an extra popsicle and paraded around with it.

He's had flashes of immaturity throughout.

The Packers should sue the signmaker that sold the sign without permission to use their logo.

They should have been asked to remove the sign or leave the stadium. They could have folded it up, and kept it for their garage.

Ripping it down is dumb.

LOL...yeah, who can imagine a college sophomore/junior acting immaturely.

It was his Heisman winning season. A sophomore?

I was repeating the first instance I could think of. I wasn't asked to provide a timeline.

Was it really so long ago when he was kicked out of UF that people don't remember?

I actually did forget this, in the midst of the other incidents I was remembering. Thanks for adding on.

You were talking about a college junior taking an extra popsicle and calling it immature. Do you seriously not see how silly that sounds?

I don't know how to further explain that I brought up the first incident that he had that I could think of. There have been several since, and as seen in the link above, before that I had neglected.

Why is this a difficult discussion for you?

One would think that if there were so many you would find one from his time as a professional, not when he was in college and acting like an idiot, just like the rest of us were.

The football fan who lost his Green Bay Packers banner to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton last weekend has gotten a new banner -- and says he may get another one.

The Fayetteville Observer reports Mike Dobs collected his new banner on Tuesday at a UPS store.

In addition, Dobs said a Panthers executive told him the organization will replace the original banner that Newton grabbed out of the Dobs family's hands at last Sunday's game between the Panthers and the Packers.

Newton told reporters that he took the banner because he thought it was wrong and disrespectful to have an opposing team's banner at Bank of America Stadium.

Steve Milburn, who owns the UPS store, was among several stores who offered to make the sign for free.

Well, all's right in the world then. I'm especially impressed at all the stores who took up his cause.
