Shouldn't complain about BB attendance

I still can't totally comprehend student apathy. When I was in college, I always looked forward to attending basketball games with my buddies and would do so ...sometimes at the expense of time for studying which I had to make up later.

And we sat on the upper deck on bleachers with a restricted view of the court. Also, no free Cambus to haul our ass to the game. We walked from the East side of the River.

ASU travels to Tucson for an instate rivalry. Teams rated 16 and 18th. Expect a BIG crowd of 10,000. Tucson has population of >500,000 and Phoenix area > 4 million. Only a 140 mile trip from PHX to Tucson.
So 10,000 - 12,000 on snowy nights seems very good!!!!!
And NO chance of snow in this part of AZ...

I know, right? As an incoming freshman I paid the fee for a student ticket and was told I was on a waiting list, no guarantee that I would eventually get the tickets. Luckily enough I did get the order fulfilled and kept tickets throughout my undergrad years and beyond.

The hazardous driving weather conditions
can keep folks from the Quad Cities at home.
The student apathy is another problem due
to the fact they are already in Iowa City.

Bottom Line.... This season's edition of the
Hawkeyes features a possible 1st team
All-American in Luka Garza. Do not miss
out on the action.

Someone pointed this out already but this is a women's basketball game. Women's games don't draw at the same level of men's.

Correct but amazing to me that womens basketball has come has far as it has. I'm old enough to remember when the women played in that small gym next to the main court at the Fieldhouse and a few people stood around and watched. Female athletes at Iowa today can thank Christine Grant and those pioneering women who played for the love of the game and got very little attention.

Question - is it apathy about the team? Or apathy about attending?

When I was in college waaaay back in the 70's, we went to the games because ...

1. The games weren't on TV
2. It was very inexpensive
3. It was way better than other alternatives for fun - you could go to a bar and drink anytime. This was different and fun.

If I was a student today and could watch every game in my room for free, or go to a sports bar and watch for free (no admission at least) - I'm not sure if I would go to the games or not. A lot of these sports bars can really rock during the games and can be a ton of fun!

When I was a student it was more fun to go to the bars, and closer than going to Carver hawkeye arena.
If the University could transform old capital mall into an arena I think the student attendance would explode. Businesses in the pedmall would benefit as well from the increased foot traffic.

I agree, its a very different student environment today as opposed to 30-40 years ago, including especially the factors you itemized. It reasonably explains the decline but IMO it does not explain the degree of decline. The factors you listed apply to other B10 schools also but student sections are noticeably larger at other B10 schools.

It hurts having the venue so far away from where most of the students live, especially in January and February when the weather is the worst. Combine that with all games being on TV (like someone else pointed out) and it's understandable. It's also more expensive for students to attend a game now than back in the day. It sucks that students don't turn out better during the week, but I get it. I'm guessing weekend games get a better turnout from students, though.

Agree. It is a problem at Iowa - a tough one to fix.

At Iowa, going to football games is "cool". Going to BB games is not.

I'm not sure there is a lot that the Athletic dept can do to make it "cool" - it probably has to be organic. Cheaper tickets, better/cheaper concessions, even better seats - it might make a little difference but it isn't going to result in students packing CHA.

Having back-to-back-to-back-to-back teams like this one - that would help a lot!

My bad. The women played Thursday or Friday and the men the next day or 2.
When looking at stats, I was surprised ISU is at 14K and Iowa at 12.7K. Arizona is in between at 13K. Iowa is 23rd and State was 21st, I think.

We don't really need all sellouts if 10k can get as loud as they were vs Rutgers. Let's not act like weather and being during week haven't been factors lately. Let's see how crowd is vs Illinois if it's not another snowstorm. CR/IC just isn't a big population center....seems like a lot people struggle to understand that. Hitting a 2 hr, 7:30 game on a Monday when snow/ice/cold are often factors is much different than hitting a 3+hr Saturday football game in the fall.

Funny how with ISU losing all the time now how Hilton Magic isn’t creating sell outs as fans aren’t showing up.
