SI loves Hawkeyes

Season sweeps of Michigan State and Purdue? Our ranking of Iowa as a No. 1 seed is not too aggressive. If the Hawkeyes hadn't blown a 20-point lead and lost by one against Iowa State in Ames back on Dec. 10, they would be making a push for the top overall seed. They have another big game ahead this week against Maryland in College Park.

Wow. "Top overall seed" and "Iowa" is as rare a pairing as "intelligent philanthropist" and "Trump."

Let's hope the Hawkeyes stay steady and take care of business Thursday night. We don't want them to make SI look bad.

If we win Thursday, I think without a doubt we should be the #1 ranked team in the country, and barring a major meltdown, should be a shoe in for a #1 seed.

Holy crap...

No one in the country is a shoe in for a #1 seed. We have 9 conference games left! AND the Big Ten Tourney.

Correct. Now if we had only one game left and we were 27-3 then maybe we could say we are a shoe in for a #1 seed. But as it stand there is a 1/3 of the season remaining and a lot can happen.

There is a lot of basketball left to play. Iowa has played consistently well (except maybe the Rutgers game) and they've been a joy to watch, start to finish. But I wouldn't be hanging any National Championship banners up just yet.

SI blows.........they are the worst, only jumping on bandwagon for ratings/sales.

Case in point: In their College BB issue, at beginning of year, Jarrod Uthoff wasn't even given a mention as a Player of year, or All American. He should have been considering he was ONLY player in NCAA last year with 45 3's and 40 blocked shots.

As long as they don't put us on the cover, I don't care what they do or say.
Yes, the publicity is good for the program. But they are no better at predicting the future than anyone else.

Nah. I have been as big a Uthoff booster as anybody on this board, and for a longer time than most. I wanted him out of high school. But have you ever heard anybody mention the combination of three-point shoots and blocked shots as a way to measure a player's abilities? Points and rebounds; points and assists; assists and turnovers; rebounds and blocked shots; steals and blocked shots; but when somebody's sitting down to write a pre-season story about top players, he doesn't start the list by looking up the combination of three-point shooting blocked shots.

I'm not saying it isn't an excellent combination or that he doesn't deserve consideration as POY. What I'm saying is that his numbers in those areas were not a reason somebody unfamiliar with his game should have singled him out for pre-season praise.

One can hardly blame the media for not giving JU that kind of love before the season started. I think it's fair to say that he has exceeded all but the most rosy predictions for his senior season.

Iowa is playing as well as we've seen in a long time. Still, there's a lot of BB left to play. They need to win a lot of games to get a 1 seed. It's going to be a tough road, and that starts tomorrow night. A win tomorrow night would by itself be a wonderful achievement, but it's still only one more step.

Love SI or hate it, that kind of pub is what we want for Iowa. Now the Hawkeyes have to show they can play as well as a #1 seed as they have otherwise. That's all.

While Uthoff has exceeded my expectations, his performance this year is actually not that surprising. Anyone who watched him play the past two seasons could see the talent he possesses. The only question this year would be whether he would be assertive enough to be a bona fide star.

The only excuse for not having Uthoff in the preseason top 100 was if you did not see him play in the past two years.

Preseason lists of all kinds sell magazines. But they don't mean squat at the end of the season, when the product has been presented up against other players and teams, throughout a season from start to finish.

The national media is taking note of the incredible performances so far by Uthoff, just like they did when Brad Banks damn near won the Heisman in 2002 after not making ANYONE's preseason Heisman list.

I don't think anyone, including Iowa fans, would have predicted Uthoff would be considered as one of the best players in the nation if you asked them before the season started...or I'll even say before the Big Ten regular season began. What he has done in the last month has put him in rare air. Sure, he had potential to have a strong senior year being "the man" for the Hawks (I was among the many Hawk fans aware of the possibilities), but his game has developed TREMENDOUSLY compared to last season. I hope he can sustain this greatness for the rest of the season, because if he can I think he has a terrific shot at concensus all-America.

I agree, no one thought JU would be playing like this this year. He was showing signs this fall, but the consistency didn't come until January, when the rest of the team got on board, realizing what they had. But..., he still should have been on the preseason top 100 list. Most people here saw that.
