SIAP: 23andMe Bankruptcy

What's the deal with the failure? Is it just one of those things where everyone that was ever going to "buy" it bought it in a relatively short period of time, and there was no more growth possible? And of course it's not something you can sell over and over.

That would be my guess. They pretty much saturated the market.

I’m sure that’s part of it.

# of individuals buying kits to submit probably plateaud and there is no need to do it again so no recurring revenue stream there.

Whomever they sold data too probably realized there is not much use paying anymore if the data is still the same.

Yeah, it's weird that it wasn't pretty obvious in retrospect. I never thought about it much, but it was so well hyped and exposed, it seems like a no brainer that there are people that this appeals to, and people it doesn't, and anyone it appeals to is likely to do it relatively early on. Seems pretty clear you would run out of interested parties pretty quickly.

I just saw on bluesky that there was a way to delete your information on 23 and me
Can’t link it right now

That's it. They never solved the riddle of people only needing a product one time.

China is going to buy your genetic information now. Good luck.
I thought they already had. I could be remembering incorrectly but I recall a 60 minutes piece talking about China owning most of the genetic sequencing companies.

Maybe the police will buy it as a front, to keep encouraging people to submit potential evidence against themselves and their families.

Good question but I would think the data goes somewhere. I never did it but guessing the T&C’s allow for another entity to get all of the data in the event of sale/acquisition/etc.

Im sure it does. And I don't know that China would go after the data first (or be allowed). I would think that health care / biotech, life insurance, or some marketing firm might want the data, and THEN sell parts to China. And other parts to other orgs.

Could absolutely see the fed govt buying to then farm out to local PDs for exactly what @Pinehawk says above.

Glad I never submitted.
