Just curious if anyone knows much about this young man. I see he nailed a 58 yarder in HS. I've tried to watch him a little in warm-ups but my ADD gets the best of me and I seem to miss his kicks.

Just curious if this is likely to be an area of concern for 2016.

It'll be worrisome. Two relatively unknowns and untested kickers in walk on Recinos and scholarship holder Mick Ellis.

I know nothing about either. Just looking for a little info.

Both have strong legs, neither is koehn on kickoffs though. Accuracy/nerve issues with both are expected being new. One will emerge and one most likely transfer ( unless one becomes KO specialist) or possible compete for the open P position.

Our kickoff coverage teams will have to strap it on. We've been spoiled with Marshall.

I'm his dad, and am immensely proud of him. So, take what I say with a grain of salt.

His 58 yarder was the 3rd longest in Iowa state history. He kicked it off the ground, on grass, btw, which makes it even more impressive. Nearly all HS kickers use blocks to kick with, because they're allowed, which makes kicking far easier. When he was a HS sophomore he decided he wanted to kick D1. He told me "Dad, if I can't use a block in college, I gotta get used not using one now".

Iowa's ST transition will be critical in the coming year. They will not scholly an incoming kicker or punter for 2016, so both will have to come from within the team. I believe the staff are pleased with their players' progress, however, as they have essentially halted active recruitment of a kicker or punter for 2016.

UI spring ball is gonna be very interesting, to be sure.

Good points. Except for one thing - my kid will transfer when Hell freezes over, lol. He's dreamed of being a Hawkeye since he was 12.

You're absolutely right. Koehn is a beast. He has one of the strongest kicking legs I've ever seen, and I've seen a ton. He won the Jamie Kohl (national kicking guru) KO competition this year, besting Roberto Aguayo of Florida state, with an 85 yd (!!!) KO. My kid says Koehn has made a 70 yd FG in practice.

Thanks for update. Love to hear he has had the dream of being a Hawkeye. I love to see kids like this dreams come true. I'll be pulling for him. Is he working as a kicker only or punter too? I thought he punted in HS

Does the comment that no scholarshipped kicker on roster mean that Mick Ellis ( Texas HS recruit) is not staying at Iowa? Miguel is the only other kicker to see the field this year. A couple of PATs , I believe.

Rooting for Miguel's success at Iowa. I understand the kicker's role. I kicked in HS (small IA school). 1 42 yarder in a game. Best in practice was 45. Also my limit- 5'8" 130 soaking wet with full pads. My weight lifting program consisted of throwing lots of hay and straw bales 5 and 6 high on hay wagons every summer. No weightlifting program or coaching at my old high school back then in the mid 80s.

Not to take away from the subject, but I think if not for the missed PATs, Koehn would be getting MUCH more pub, both regionally and nationally, than he's getting right now. After that Pitt game, he was approaching Nate Kaeding status.

RCJazzman, I always wondered which player your son was. I am glad that you've been willing to post your thoughts on this board. However, I mean this for the best and am sorry if it comes across a little raw... either change your handle or stop posting and reading next year. You'll be sick a few times if we lose some close games and the "crowd" here goes off due to a kicker mistake. I would just hate to see people take advantage of your willingness to post openly, and believe me, plenty of jerks would do just that. This board has virtually no moderation as it is...

Sorry for the confusion. Ellis is on scholarship. I was referring to new scholarships granted to any new incoming player(s).

Thanks for sharing. Much respect to you and your accomplishments. Even these days, only the biggest high schools have kicking coaches, though things are definitely better in terms of learning the kicking/punting craft than they were for you. We took Miguel to regional and national camps, where he learned from former pros. I attended as well, and took lots of notes. I was a goalkeeper in college, and found the transition of kicking a football to be a fun challenge from having kicked a soccer ball for so long. I had the privilege of coaching Miguel his senior year, and continue to coach our HS specialists, as my way of giving back to our community.

Thanks for your consideration. I thought long and hard about whether or not to reveal my connection, but concluded that it worth it to share what I know with my fellow Hawk fans, because I know how much fun it can be to get "inside info" about the team I love so much (30+ yr Hawk fan here).

After reading a ton of the posts on the board, I've come to a pretty good understanding of each of the regular posters' perspectives. Most of us are not assholes, and many of us give thoughtful opinions. ; )

To be sure, there are plenty of flamers out there, most of which we haven't seen since this past summer (coincidence???? I think not). Don't know how Miguel's Hawkeye story will unfold, but it has been immensely rewarding thus far. I'm sure there will be ups and downs, but I know how I, and the coaching staff, feel about my kid. If things get too hot on this board, I'll try to ignore unfounded opinions or I may take a vacation, who knows.

You're welcome. He's doing both. He did both in HS.

Very true. These things never turn out well.

Man, I remember that Mick Ellis getting some serious praise his senior year from Chris Sailor as one of the top four best kickers in the country.

And Iowa has had some highly rated kickers and punters on scholarship that did well like Ryan Donahue and Nate Kaeding and then some that did not perform so well like Trent Mossbrucker and Connor Kornbrath. Kicking in Kinnick or Midwest football stadiums in the fall can be a challenge (rain, wind, cold) besides the crowds.

I am not writing off either Mick or Miguel. May the best man rise to the task. My Hawkeye insider like Miguel better at this point ( at kicker). Incoming freshman Shaun Breyer may become another Nick Gallery ( TE to Punter). Spring ball may clear up kicker's spot.

Shaun Breyer will do more than punter for Iowa. That kid has skills !

I was told by my friend he stands 7ft tall and shoots lightning bolts from his eyes and fireballs from his arse. But thats just how my scottish friend descirbes everyone he has yet to meet.

I read that somewhere, but don't recall seeing any video of him punting. I'll have to check his rivals profile. Competition is a good thing, as it certainly helped Kidd's punting IMO. Is Breyer joining the tream in the spring or fall? I've seen non-kicking/punting video of his; he's a very talented player.

RCJazzman.... BEYER ( I must have been thinking about Breyer ice cream at the times, sorry and I am fan of Whitey's) was said to have had a 45 yard punting average as a senior. I know he is excellent athlete and could do much more at Iowa than punt but some athleticism is needed at punter (high snap, quickness, focus and follow thru and the occasional tackle). Reggie Roby, Lon Olenzak (sp), Nick Gallery and Ryan Donahue were some of the better athletes Iowa had as a punter.

RCJazzman ... are you a professional musician or a Quad City (Bix Jazz) native? Just wondered how you choose your username.

Mason City, I believe, as in "The Music Man". Though the river in "River City" is the Mississippi River in Davenport, across from Rock Island, also mentioned in the musical.
