It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Go Hawks!

Something I put together and posted on my page a few minutes ago. Dunno where else to post it…

Cobe Siebrecht; Lisbon HS/Iowa Hawkeyes

Props to Iowa Hawkeyes 157 lber, Cobe Siebrecht, for he was named the Big 10 Wrestler Of The Week this week. He earned this award by pinning No. 10 ranked Anthony Artalona in the Iowa vs. Penn dual a few days ago after fighting off a tight headlock to get off his own back to score the pin… and was a key part in Iowa going up to 5-0 on the season as a team following the dual.

In Cobe’s collegiate career to this point, he has a respectable record of 20 wins and 5 losses and is coming off an impressive summer in which he placed 4th at the U23 World Team Trials.

This is something I put together a couple years ago that summarizes Cobe’s HS career:

In 2016, Lisbon Freshman, Cobe Siebrecht’s season ended when he placed 4th at districts. That was the last time that Cobe had in HS where his season ended prior to the Iowa HS State Wrestling Finals. He placed 2nd, 2nd and 1st in his final 3 years and had he not faced a 3X state champion (Adam Allard of West Sioux ) and 4X state champion (Alex Thomsen of Underwood) in the two years he placed 2nd, then who knows…. He may have become a 3X state champion.

When Cobe started his Senior season tenure of HS in 2019, he was a different animal. He was awesome the previous years, but his game had risen to the level where he was one of the best pound-for-pound guys in the state with huge wins at the prestigious Freak Show tournament in Las Vegas prior to the season and a Cliff Keen Indee Invitational Title to kick off the regular season, in which he defeated nationally ranked, Wyatt Henson in the finals. Cobe ended up having an almost flawless Senior season with his lone loss being an upset at the state duals…A loss he bounced back from completely, considering he won state a few days later and won all 4 matches convincingly in doing so. He finished with a season record of 52-1 and a career record of 191-28 with 116 falls.

Cobe currently wrestles for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and appears to be doing just fine there.

Cobe is the son of Jamie and Tracy Siebrecht and the middle brother between oldest brother, Cooper who was also a state champion for Lisbon and currently competes for Mankato State University and youngest brother, Cade who was a 2X Iowa HS State Champion and is also at Iowa now. All 3 Siebrecht brothers won a state title. 3 brothers, 4 state championships and I believe 7 finals appearances. That’s incredible.

Was just thinking…

I noticed there was another Siebrecht thread I could have posted my write up in… kinda feel silly posting mine in Todd’s. Todd, sorry bout that… wasnt trying to derail the attention from your article… I think you do a great job putting those together. Just didn’t know where else to put it at the time.

Why is it the hardest workers always seem to be the luckiest?
I generally agree with these takes and the excitement over Siebrecht's potential. That said, 2 things can be true at once. He WAS lucky not to get pinned, and it WASN'T just luck that he got the reversal and pin. As expected, in his interview (if I recall correctly) he clearly noted he should have never been in that predicament, and was super excited to fight out of it. Love his style, and if he can keep improving on finding that risk-reward sweet spot, he could become a dangerous dude.

It wasn’t luck he got the reversal, rather understanding of leverage and greed on the part of his opponent, imo.

Coby could have been counting lights the rest of that period if his opponent had decided to just keep him there. But the guy went for the pin and that meant shifting his center of gravity and attempting to force Cobe’s far shoulder to the mat. And that was what he was waiting for…
