May 10 UPDATE: TJ gets $12.4M SIGNING BONUS, 4 YEAR DEAL WORTH $19.8M

Detroit Lions sign top pick T.J. Hockenson to big rookie contract

In the hours after the Detroit Lions made him the No. 8 overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft, T.J. Hockenson kept remarking about how "cool" it was "to play football for a living."

"I would play for free," Hockenson said on draft night. "This is awesome."

As of Thursday, Hockenson will officially get paid to play the game he loves.

Hockenson was one of three Lions to sign their rookie contracts Thursday, signing a four-year slotted deal worth $19.8 million that includes a $12.4 million signing bonus.

Hockenson is expected to play a major role for the Lions this fall, likely starting at tight end in a redesigned offense that will feature plenty of two tight end sets.

He led Iowa with 760 yards receiving on 49 catches last year, when he won the Mackey Award as college football's top tight end, and was regarded as one of the most complete tight end to enter the draft in the past decade.

For that reason, the Lions made Hockenson the rare high draft pick at the position. In the past 40 years, three other tight ends have gone in the top eight of the draft.

"Really checked every box that we had in terms of the evaluation process from on field, to third down, to red area, to blocking, to special teams, to culture, to intelligence, to work ethic," Quinn said. "You name it, he checked basically every box throughout the whole process."

Poor Kittle made these guys a ton of money and he won’t get paid till next year
Exactly right.

George will make "just" $2.7M over the first 4 years of his contract.

TJ will average over $3M per year.

See the link at the end of this post for more info.

George Kittle signed a 4 year contract worth $2,698,296 with the 49ers on May 11, 2017. Kittle received a guarantee worth $298,296 including a $298,296 signing bonus.

George's Salary:
539,574: 2017
629,574: 2018
719,574: 2019

809,574: 2020
2,698,296 TOTAL

keep in mind that the 49'ers have George under contract until 2021 (the 5th year is a club option)

So, the 49'ers have George for cheap for the next 3 seasons ('19, '20, and '21 seasons)

That's what sucks about the NFL; the QBs make all the money and everybody else is fighting for the leftovers

Welllllll..... Sign me up for the leftovers if you would please....... In fairness its a copy cat league, and the success of not only Kittle, but Ertz and Kelsey, Grahmn, and Gronk of course, and even steady dependable guys like Witten have made this position all the rage right now. I really think that Hock would have returned next year, but it was the perfect storm with his and Fant's success, coupled with whats going on in the league, so he really had no choice but to strike while the iron was red hot....

The 5th year option on rookie contracts are only for first round picks.

Crazy, isn't it, that TJ will earn more this season (roughly $3.5M) than George will in 4 seasons (under $3M)?

Um, no ain't gonna happen. Kittle will be getting paid. Soon.... Did George make some more money for Fant and TJ?? Absolutely! The play of GK last year and being that Noah & Hock played for KF, made them more attractive players. That is no doubt ...

Now, If Kittle has the year he did last season, or say anything around 70+% of last season's production, he will be getting a massive raise at the beginning of 2020.

Kittle's raise will be huge. We are talking $10-14 million in a raise - PER YEAR. George will be getting paid. Soon. He would now, if he wasn't eligible for a contract restructure until the end of 2019.

Crazy money for a 21 year old from a tiny town in Iowa, huh?

:)
well, not only that, but since the population of places like Iowa is so small and sparse (largest city has 250,000), the people who come from places like Iowa are inherently stupid, uneducated, backward, and really do not amount to much in life.

We just cannot seem to keep up with these sophisticated northernes and people from large densely populated states like Florida and Texas and California.

The top 1% of wage earners in the US average $480,000.
George is doing OK for himself.

Message for T.J.: Stay healthy. Marry an athletic hottie. Have about five sons. Send them to Iowa.

additional . . . I want Fant to do the same thing while living in Nebraska. Signing Nebraska studs to play at Iowa makes each victory over the bugeaters taste even sweeter.

I'm guessing this will be restructured soon...

Lets hope he stays healthy, indeed.

Kittle isn't eligible for a contract extension until after the 2019 season.

George Kittle extension projected at $12 million-plus by NFL.com

The San Francisco 49ers will have some big decisions to make down the line in terms of giving extensions to some of their younger players, with one of those being what to give tight end George Kittle.

Kittle isn't eligible for a contract extension until after the 2019 season, so this isn't an issue the 49ers will have to worry about right away (although they certainly may already have it in mind when planning for the future). But Kittle will eventually command a significant amount of money, especially if he continues to produce at the record-setting level he achieved in 2018 (88 catches, 1,377 yards, five touchdowns).

How much might Kittle be worth down the line? For starters, it’ll be a lot more than the top salaries at the tight end position right now. Jimmy Graham of the Green Bay Packers is currently the highest-paid tight end on average in the NFL (according to Spotrac.com) at $10 million a year, followed by Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs at $9.368 million and Jordan Reed of the Washington Redskins at $9.35 million. A feature posted Wednesday written by Anthony Holzman-Escareno of NFL.com provides ballpark estimates of what Kittle and other eventual extensions will be worth and guesses Kittle will land a deal between $12 and $15 million a year, which would make him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL by a wide margin - unless Kelce and Zach Ertz of the Eagles ($8.5 million a year) are given deals that top it.

"The Chiefs and Eagles played their hands well signing Kelce and Zach Ertz to extensions in 2016 before either truly emerged as the game-changing pass catchers they've become," wrote Holzman-Escareno. "The next elite tight to sign a deal should shatter the AAV that currently paces the position (Graham's $10 million). Kittle will have to continue to build on his recent success, but he's likely to be that tight end, despite not being eligible to renegotiate until the 2020 offseason."

With other extensions on the horizon such as O.J. Howard of the Buccaneers, Evan Engram of the Giants and Hunter Henry of the Chargers, as Holzman-Escareno mentions, it's safe to say the tight end market will be reset across the board over the next few years. But Kittle, who joined the NFL as a fifth-round pick in 2017, could wind up being worth more than any of them, which means the 49ers would have to decide if they want to be the team to pay. Chances are Kittle would be a player the 49ers would want to secure as a franchise cornerstone given what he's shown so far and the potential he still has for the future.

"There's more in there in terms of his will," 49ers general manager John Lynch said in December, per 49ers.com. "But there's things that he can develop in his game that can make him an even stronger player. That has George excited. It has us very excited. But, I think the biggest lesson for our team, you watch that guy, that guy outworks people by the way he comes, and it starts not only out on the field, but the way he prepares his body. He's learned that in short order and that makes you really proud.”

As one of the biggest (if not biggest) stars on the team, Kittle is going to end up with some crazy endorsement deals on top of everything else. No doubt about it.

*What would be great to see, is all three Iowa guys trading highlights throughout the 2019 season. Could be a lot of fun.

This only further supports the idea that coming out early rarely pays dividends. If you are a football player that truly believes you will be elite in the NFL, leaving early as anything beyond the first round essentially means you are giving up potentially MILLIONS of dollars. Hooker leaving early is a perfect example. Unless he never believes he will be more than an average nickel-back or back up player, he should have stayed and worked his way up the draft for a significantly more lucrative rookie contract.

Kittle should endorse a pooper scooper, while living in San Francisco. He'll make a gazillion.
