Smith-Marsette declares for NFL draft

Btw, is that stat suggesting that IMS caught 110 of 114 targets over the past two seasons?........................

Okay.
No, the original poster mashed together two different sentences:

In his four-year career at Iowa, Smith-Marsette caught 110 passes for 1,615 yards and 14 touchdowns. Smith-Marsette was also used in Iowa's run game at times on jet sweeps as he had 34 carries for 274 yards and four touchdowns, including one in the 2019 Holiday Bowl victory over USC.
....

Here’s hoping he’s at least healthy for the Senior Bowl in January, as he’s already accepted his invite. With only 114 targets over the past two seasons in Iowa’s run-heavy offense, that week of practices will be massive for his draft stock."

Could he play next year? YES. So he is just saying that he is opting to go pro and not play in the bowl game. As I noted above, I think he is still recovering from the ankle sprain so that made the decision easier.
I believe that the coaches have the option whom they give the extra year to. My guess is only 2-3 Seniors will be given the option. It is expensive and causes a big dropoff in developed talent down the road.

Why? He may be foregoing a year of eligibility but he’s not really “leaving early”.

Unless you’re going to burn down the combine, I don’t think he showed enough or brings enough to the table to get drafted above the 4th round. Why not come back, work on your craft and try and maximize that rookie contract?

Congrats and good luck to ISM.

Is he playing in the bowl?
I believe his announcing now precludes him from playing again. He's done. Don't know if he may not be physically able or just didn't want to take the risk and opted out.

I don't get the hate...he's a kid/young adult, everyone makes mistakes. Good luck in the NFL ISM, you deserve your shot.
I can see both sides of this, and the kid is a talent from a game changing speed perspective like we haven't had probably since the other #6 Tim Dwight. I don't however understand the "Mistake" argument all the time. We've all watched the young man for the last four years, and we saw the same kind of mistakeS, on , and sometimes off the field, these four years. Once or twice a mistake maybe, but this has been more then an isolated incident over several years. No one is saying ISM isn't a good kid, but theres no question he has some control issues, and its not just a singular mistake.

Can’t believe all the ‘won’t get drafted’ or ‘6-7 round at best’ comments.

In looking at mock drafts and position rankings, he’ll certainly be drafted. And one drunk driving offense and some showmanship and everyone hates him now. Got it.

I loved watching him. We couldn’t utilize him as he probably deserved. Wouldn’t shock me one bit to see him catching passes next fall in the NFL
Why does someone having a constructive comment mean "They hate the guy". I for one never said anything like that, but there is no question he lacks self control, and doesn't think things through sometimes. Doesn't make him a bad guy, and it doesn't mean everybody hates him either. He's also a VERY lucky guy, because if he had struck someone during his DUI incident his life and legasy, (not to mention whom ever he hit) would have been destroyed forever.

First, I hope Smith-Marsette does well in the NFL though I would be surprised if he becomes more than a 3rd string, Kick Return specialist. Second, I don't think Iowa will miss him much next year at all due to have a lot of good WR talent in the wings.

Smith-Marsette has good speed, agility, vision and was a good, willing blocker but he has a fatal flaw. He reminds me of Stone Hands from Necessary Roughness, in other words he has trouble catching the ball if it is away from his body. In the NFL a WR is going to have make those tough catch's and I haven't seen that ability from Smith-Marsette in these 4 years.

Broke his leg on a celebration and doesn't regret it. He had a fun and exciting career. Too bad he had to end his career by covering up an injury that kept him out of the bowl game. We'll see how far pride gets him in The League.

You can be cocky as F in the NFL if you can produce. Especially at the WR position. Was good at Iowa but I think he'll find himself as just anther guy in the NFL.

Yeah, he may very well be opting out because he couldn't play anyway and worse because of how he got injured. Not a good look. Anyway, he was a dynamic playmaker, and they didn't have the QB play to get him the ball where he needed it most of the time this particular year. He was 100% underutilized this year.

He's got speed and ability, hopefully that allows him to stick in the NFL. Thanks for the memories kid, and good luck wherever life takes you.

He is similar to Emmanuel Sanders. Emmanuel is having a pretty good NFL career.

I would take ISM on my favorite Pro Team (Vikings) over who they currently have returning kicks, and maybe he can return punts too, as they are lame there too. No reason he couldn't see some time at WR too. I guess we'll find out in time.

I guess those still made at ISM for showboating injury causing him to miss the Michigan game and then declaring for NFL before Bowl game can get over it. Neither game happened. Didn't matter.

good luck ISM, been fun watching u play!

NFL is brutal

Vikings waived WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette.

Smith-Marsette loses his roster spot to trade pickup Jalen Reagor. As a rookie, Smith-Marsette appeared in eight games and caught 5-of-6 targets for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 86 offensive snaps. He's another member of the Vikings' 2021 draft class cut in the last 24 hours. Only four of the 11 picks made by ex-GM Rick Spielman last year remain on the active roster.
