So as of today what is our projected starting 5

Fran has spotlighted his top player every year. Wieskamp would be no different. Gatens, Marble, White, Uthoff, Jok, Cook, Garza and it will hopefully be Wieskamp next.

This site has already updated the roster for next year and there's no JW. I'm guessing they know JW isn't coming back. It's weird to see the new roster with so few players. Ash maybe picked a back time to leave.

10 players on the roster for 2021-2022, right?

Joe T
Ahron U
Tony P
Connor M
Payton S
Keegan M
Kris M
Patrick M
Josh O
Riley M

Scoring Guard and Power Forward/Center are the 2 areas with the least experience/skill level on the team. Iowa can mix and match to find combinations that work. I am also hopeful that Iowa will bring in at least 2 transfers for next year - a Power Forward and a Scoring Guard. Iowa could be pretty good with the right 2 players.

Mine:

Joe T
Perkins (Joe W., if he returns...doubtful)
Pmac
Kris
Keegan

And, I'll add that I hope all five can shoot an average of 35% from three. If so, this team can defend, run, and shoot.

Who I think Fran will start:

Joe T (CMac, if Joe W returns)
CMac (Joe W. if he returns)
Pmac
Keegan
Josh O or Mulvey
35% from 3 seems a stretch with that lineup, I guess you never know but last years stats with Luka drawing a crowd were:
Joe T - 0.273
Keegan - 0.296
CMac - 0.277
PMac - 0.302

I’d really like to see this starting 5:
Ulis -6’0”
Kris -6’9”
PMac-6’9”
Keegan -6’9”
Rebraca-6’9”

Can’t play them 30 mpg, but for spurts that would create a mismatch on offense someplace and so much length on defense. Throw in some 1-3-1 zone on defense. I believe that they are quick enough for again 5 minute spurts maybe to the 8 minute mark, I dunno but like the possibilities . C’mon Filip join the party 🎊

Ultimately, I hope Kris is good enough to supplant Connor in the starting lineup. He adds more to this lineup than Connor.
Although this would be great, we don't know this yet. CMac is a 5th-year senior who knows the offenses and defenses inside out. That has to count for something.

I don’t see any way that connor is healthy to start the season. It took jbo a long time to rehab 1 hip, connor has to rehab both. And from what I understood they do one surgery and wait a few weeks? to do the other hip, pushing his timeline back even further. So i see a couple different scenarios playing out, connor misses the start of the season, the team plays well and when he returns it cant be justified starting him. OR, the team is struggling mightily and Fran inserts him back into the starting lineup. If it’s option 2, it doesn’t really matter since the season will just be used as a rebuilding year. It would mainly just take away from getting another guy experience, but doubtful it would affect next years record.
That being said, I think our starting lineup opening game is:
Pg-JoeT
Sg-Perkins
F-Pmac
F-Keegan
F/C-Rebraca

This has been mentioned and I actually really like it, with actually Connor being the piece I dislike the most. Not because I don't think he can play (like a lot of posters might say), but because he is the outlier when it comes to what style this group can play. Imagine a philosophy of a run and d with this group. Then bring in Ulis, Sandfort, Kris off the bench... there is a lot of quickness and athleticism. Don't rely on the 3 so much, because it will be a weakness, but attack the basket more through drives and cuts. For all the great plays Garza provided us, we now have an opportunity to shift philosophies away from the big man post up game and utilize driving and cutting to get those layup opportunities instead. Then the shooters we do have be ready for the drive and kick. But the focus of the offense should be attacking in the fastbreak even more than we have in the past, because that will be our biggest advantage. And if we make defense a priority there should be more fast break opportunities.

I think Iowa will be okay on defense and in the transition game next year, but the half-court offense might take a while to develop. Iowa will need to crash the boards a little more on offense given that they aren't going to make as many 3s. IF they do that, THEN I can see this being a fairly high scoring team (70+ ppg). If they don't rebound well on the offensive end, it could be a long season.
