So what's the latest timing on a potential new wrestling facility?

Off topic, but i was closing the fishing cabin in northern Ontario last week and had some wild dreams. One was that we auctioned off a trip for HWC and I got to escort the winners, coaches, and a couple wrestlers for the week.. (its a long drive, but could potentially be something to chew on the logistics about). The (almost) relevant part to this thread was that while up there, Barta and TnT finalized some paperwork and were prepared to announce the project was officially a go. Still in my dream mind you, I had to fight the urge to come report it back to the cesspool. It was one of those dreams that felt incredibly lucid.
Wait a minute you have a fishing cabin in northern Ontarioo_O:)

Back on subject..does anyone In the know have an idea where it would be built. Hopefully it would be on top of the hill overlooking CHA...what a great show piece for everyone to see as they head to CHA.

Ashton keeps getting brought up and i understand why. However, from the sound of it, he is very tough to contact(people usually are when you're after$), so not sure thats gonna amount to much. Although, who knows maybe he is involved but wants anonymity. What about all those big nfl lineman the hawks keep pumping out? You know, the former wrestlers that kf loves to turn into first round draft choices. You would think those guys, especially the home grown iowa boys, would like to help their alma mater. Cant believe I'm typing this, but a mil to those guys seems like a drop in the bucket...

One unique thing Georgia football did several years ago was the creation of a NFL alumni fundraising group. It was just as it sounds... someone within the athletic department cultivating Georgia football gifts from NFL alumni. It did a few things: targeted a high net worth demographic with extremely strong ties to the program. It gave Georgia a chance to connect with former players and it allowed former players to connect with each other. It's fundraising, they know what people want but when you make it a community and about a passion point... it goes a long ways. Maybe Iowa should be doing the same. There are a lot of former Iowa wrestlers who have gone on to be highly successful business men.

This would be my choice for the new Wrestling facility. Would be great to build some living quarters near by for the HWC guys as well.

From my understanding, the wooded area that is behind Ronald McDonald is protected land for some reason which is a shame because that plot of land is just about the same size as Carver plus parking, plus the basketball add-on. If you look at it from an aerial view it is quite large. Curious if they could build on the corner of Hawkins and Elliott? Where the trees are between Carver and Baseball? What I think should be done is some sort of massive parking structure where the dental lot is which would free up lot 40. Could easily build a 5-6 story ramp that would more than triple parking while freeing up space in lot 40 for wrestling stand alone plus living quarters.

Why does it need to be by Carver? Put it out by the HOF where there are no space restrictions.

Matt Roth, Pat Angerer, Julian Vandervelde, Riley Reiff and James Ferentz also wrestled and had or are still having solid NFL careers.

Maybe Papa Ferentz would throw some of his annual $5.1M at the facility?

To Bob and all the other donors who are taking this thing by the horns and getting this project moving in the right direction. All hawkeye wrestling fans appreciate your generosity....

Why is the University not committing any funds? Or are they just waiting until the $10 million is raised to announce the University's portion?

10mm should get us an announcement from Barta that he supports it.

It all has to be raised privately.

the Foundation does have Kevin Collins and Sloane Tyler working to help raise the funds

I just don't understand why the University isn't going to provide any funds? I could understand they want X amount raised before they announce anything but to not support the project financially amazes me.

Politics and revenue. Old AD would have been pushing this HARD.
Wouldn’t the University, or more specifically the athletic department be doing the exact same thing? Trying to get people to donate to pay for it? It’s usually donor money that goes toward all of these athletic building projects. It’s not like the University of Iowa is writing a check for a new Rowing boat house.

I think it is happening essentially the same way. Keep in mind, I don’t actually know anything. Just the way it seems. Maybe it’s an issue of, “Hey, we just built a new wrestling room. Feel free to do it, but you’ll have to raise the money on your own.”

It's incredibly impressive what a handful of individuals have done on their own for this project. I do think it allows the staff to have much more say in design.

RE: the above. We used to have an AD that was a former wrestler, heavily involved in wrestling community nationally and had much stronger relationship with wrestling staff. I do think that relationships matters in these situations. Wrestling is our strongest sport regardless of revenue. This needs to be a priority. I believe we need the AD to push this harder even if it's privately and 100% via donations. There is a lot of back channeling that can be done by AD with donors and big businesses. Not sure that is happening.

Absolutely correct. I just get the sense that a few posters are under the impression that the University should be helping pay. That just isn’t going to happen for any athletics project. Of course, it would help if the AD were pushing. Hell, maybe he is? I have no idea.

There have been pretty detailed comments answering this on this board, you can seek those out. But, as others have said, there are other fundraising/AD things in line already, things that have been in the works.

If you, we, Iowa wants this done in 15-40 years, sure, maybe it gets to the top of the list. People want it done *now, therefore completely private funding.

I'm with the others thinking that the benefits of next-to-Carver far outweigh having extra "space restrictions." Unless you are wanting to move the arena, itself, out of Carver, it would be very beneficial to be right next door. Look at football and their giant new facility, and the comments associated with its importance of location/access to each aspect of training.

Also, I don't foresee the technical difficulty with building there that you apparently do. Could be wrong of course, but I think the same was essentially said about the expansion to Carver, yet that went as planned.

I'm curious about the claim by poster claiming the wooded are is "protected." But, these are the things that are usually hammered out first, and if location was such a significant hurdle, I think we'd know about it. These guys donating and fundraising appear pretty transparent.

Curious to the experts, anything new to share since the last round of information in this thread? Thanks in advance ... I enjoy reading about any updates ...
