"Max Allen is helping the Iowa football program become a serious player on social media.

"There's so much out there," Allen said. "There's so many people tweeting about this and that. So you have to catch the eye, one way or another."

The 27-year-old Allen became Iowa's director of new media in 2014, giving Hawkeye followers an up-close and never-before-seen view of the team.

"There's a certain connectivity that social media provides," he said. "It's a common meeting place for fans, recruits and former players."

During summer camp, the university produced a series of video features with a "Hard Knocks" feel.

"Those are really great, because it's a unique experience for the fans," Allen said. "They don't get to see that and it kind of builds that Hawkeye football community.

"Everyone is kind of on the same page going into the season.""
