Softball Fall Schedule

I'm going to try, if so I'll post on how the pitching looked, and who was doing it.

OK, I got there in the top of the 3rd, Iowa up 5-0. Starkenburg pitching & Hoffman catching. Starkenburg looked good, but hard to really say given the level of competition. Highland is a JC that's approximately on the level of an average D-III team. Jillian Navarrote, a new transfer from Butler CC, came in to play one inning of 1b and then pitched the rest of the way. I thought she had good velocity and threw a normal variety of pitches, but control wasn't great. So it would seem she's the #2 right now. Is she good enough for a B10 team with at least faint aspirations of post-season play? Uncertain. The other new player with pitching experience, Ashley Yoways, played only 2b and ss.

Neither Blank nor Fritsch were in when I arrived, and did not play after. Repole and Erickson were in and out the rest of the game. Best I could tell all 7(!) new freshmen played, with lots of moving around. Blank is the only senior listed on the roster, so potentially next year's will be about the same.

We hit their pitchers well, but again, hard to draw much from that given the competition. Final score Iowa 20, Highland 1.

Thanks Row55

Did any of the freshman or transfers stand out to you as being impact players? I know its hard to tell with the level of competition.

I know it's a JC but still nice to put up 20. I don't think we would have done that last year.

No, sorry to say. Hope I'm proved wrong when the regular season gets here.

Golds Fastpitch.com has a master list of verballed players. Koral Smith is listed as a 2015 pitching recruit. I wonder if something happened and she is going to wait a year before starting college. Maybe next year's class has two pitchers.

No, didn't make it. There's an outside chance I might go to the Big 4 tournament in Ames Sunday.

I went and watch the game through the 5th inning. My impression was we are a very young team and played a lot of freshman, the pitching (Starkenberg) was fine, she missed her spots though, and walked to many but that could have been due to a tight strike zone and its still early, she threw hard though. The Second pitcher Iowa Brought in was I believe Jillian Navarrete, didn't throw as hard as Starkenberg, missed her spots too but spun the ball pretty well. Lots of stuff to clean up for the Hawks but over all good outing for early season. St Ambrose was not exactly a powerhouse with a lot of mistakes on their part but they were game, taking the walks and hit timely to even take the lead for a while. They took out their starting pitcher who was doing ok to me and brought in a girl who was called like 10 times for illegal pitches and they had to remove her, I cannot remember if they reentered or brought in a new pitcher, I think they brought a new girl in, but in the end the Hawks just over powered her and took advantage of weak pitching to whip them pretty good. It was a game up to the 5th when I left. This coming weekend in the Iowa big 4 tourney in ames will tell us a lot about the Hawks. They will be ok with Starkenberg starting but after that they are gonna have to produce a fair number of runs and play clean defense to win. I predict UNI will win it all with Iowa or Drake runner up. UNI has a solid team. It was nice to get out and watch the Hawks play though and I might even drive over on sunday to watch them play. Wish Kirkwood was in the Big 4 tourney vice Upper Iowa but it still will be good games. Kirkwood gave Wisky a run in the second game of their double header. I know Iowa plays them (Kirkwood) the following week just would like to see how they would have done against ISU, UNI and Drake.
