Johnson County officials are still searching for a Solon student who went missing after a canoe capsized and sent two people into Coralville Lake on Sunday afternoon.

Officials received a call at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday about a capsized canoe carrying two people in the area near Twin View Heights and across from Bobbers Grill in North Liberty.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said in a release Sunday night that one person was pulled from the water by bystanders and taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The sheriff's office, with the assistance of other agencies, has been dragging the lake to search for the second person since Sunday afternoon.

A Solon student was involved in the accident on Sunday, the Solon Community School District said Monday in a release and through social media. Superintendent Davis Eidahl confirmed Monday that the missing person in the canoe accident is a Solon student, but he would not release the person's name.

"Right now, we've been communicating with the family through their pastor, and we want to honor the family's request and give them time and space right now," he said.

The other person in the canoe was not a student at Solon, Eidahl said.

Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said Monday morning that the search for the second person is in "recovery mode" and he does not believe a rescue is possible.

Pulkrabek said the search was focused on a cove in the lake, but that obstacles like trees, rocks and other debris were making it difficult for officials to drag the lake. The sheriff's office will use dive teams to search, although Pulkrabek didn't know how many divers would be sent.

The boat may have capsized by one of the boaters standing to take a picture, according to Pulkrabek.

"Someone was attempting to take some sort of photograph and somehow the canoe capsized," he said.

Today is Solon's first day of class for the semester, and Eidahl said classes would continue as normal, but with "extreme flexibility" for students who wish to speak with counselors, coaches or pastors. The school has trained counselors and professionals from Grant Wood AEA, as well as from the Solon United Methodist Church and St. Mary's Catholic Church, according to the school's release.

Eidahl said the school's goal is to provide support and someone to talk to for students who knew the person involved in the accident.

"We understand that there's going to be a lot of students that are going to be impacted. When you have a smaller school like Solon, every student knows each other," he said.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is being assisted in the search by the North Liberty police and fire departments, Solon Fire Department, Swisher Fire Department, Johnson County Ambulance, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Metro Area Dive Team.

Seems odd that one would even think to get in a canoe when it is below freezing, but call me the crazy one?

Since he was apparently underwater, one wonders if he was even wearing a life vest; heavy clothing, ice cold water... madness.

Really awful to hear. I used to river kayak by myself quite a bit in the winter. Break through ice, drag my craft thru impassible water on thin ice, sit in it and hop up and down until my boat would break thru the ice and drop into the water. Really, really dumb. I still do occasionally paddle in the winter with another experienced paddler but what I used to do was a death wish. I feel for the family. Just horrible news.

Article says they were in the boat to get a picture of a house. Not sure if it was a real estate deal or what. They said someone stood to get the picture and the boat capsized. Really terrible and sad situation. The kid was out with his girlfriend's father who I'm sure is absolutely devastated.

Johnson County officials recovered the body of 17-year-old Solon student Tanner Wymer on Monday morning, after a canoeing accident sent two people into Coralville Lake on Sunday afternoon.

Wymer, of rural Iowa City, was pulled from Coralville Reservoir at 11:05 a.m., according to a release from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials had been searching for Wymer since 2:45 p.m. Sunday when they received a call about a capsized canoe carrying two people in the area near Twin View Heights and across from Bobbers Grill in North Liberty.

The sheriff's office identified the second person in the canoe as Michael Felton, 51, of Solon. In the release, officials said Felton was able to swim to the shore and await rescue. He was pulled from the water by neighbors and taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics via Johnson County Ambulance, officials said.

Felton was in good condition on Monday, according to Johnson County Sheriff's Sgt. Kevin Elliott.

The canoe was lightweight plastic or fiberglass, according to the release, and did not contain any flotation safety devices. Felton sat in the rear of the canoe and Wymer was in the middle, according to the release.

The two were on open water to photograph a nearby residence, the release said, and Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said the boat may have capsized by one of the boaters standing to take a picture. Officials said the combination of wind, waves and current were also factors that caused the accident.

"Someone was attempting to take some sort of photograph and somehow the canoe capsized," he said.

The Solon Community School District said Monday morning in a release and through social media that a Solon student had been involved in the accident. On Monday morning, before Wymer was found, Superintendent Davis Eidahl confirmed that the missing person in the canoe accident was a Solon student, but he would not release Wymer's name.

"Right now, we've been communicating with the family through their pastor, and we want to honor the family's request and give them time and space right now," he said.

Pulkrabek said the search was focused on a cove in the lake, but that obstacles like trees, rocks and other debris were making it difficult for officials to drag the lake.

According to Johnson County Emergency Management Director Dave Wilson, the conditions Sunday night made the search difficult. Darkness, cold and debris all posed a challenge for the search team, which also included dive teams.

Wilson said he would not advise anyone to go out on Coralville Lake as the ice is not solid or stable and would not be safe.

"As you can see just by looking out at the lake today, there's ice formations but nothing that you'd want to walk on," he said.

51 year old man takes a 17 year old out in a canoe on a near frozen lake in January to take photos of a house?

Seems legit.

Not just a near frozen lake, a near frozen reservoir. One that, as of last week, was about 15 feet high for winter. With no life jackets.......in January. This had trouble written on it from the beginning.

The 51 year old was able to swim to shore? Jesus if I was dumb enough to bring a teenager in that situation, I would not swim to shore while the kid drowns.

If someone did in fact stand up in the canoe (especially without flotation devises) that tells me that sadly... they really did not know what they were doing.

Survival instincts work differently for different people. While there certainly seems to be some questions regarding the circumstances, I'm not going to pass judgment until all the details come to light. In the meantime, a young man is dead and several are grieving his loss.
