Some positives from a stressful win

PG Observations:

I like Joe T. for his toughness and aggressiveness but the offense just seems herky jerky and disjointed when he is running the point. Not every single play but overall. He has improved his short range game and is a minor threat from 3. He tends to play smaller than his height when driving to bucket/hangs in air too long? His defense is very feast or famine as he goes for steals but does not generally stay in front of his man. He is one of the most athletic on the team and is a very good defender, but tends to under perform vs athleticism.

Ulis seems very mentally tough, very even keel and runs the offense much more smoothly. Very fluid. He is incredibly efficient with the ball. Not an amazing passer but not afraid and makes good decisions. His shooting is still TBD but has nice form on FT's, can get to the bucket and did make a 3 last night. Still a ways to go on scoring.
HIs defense is underated, he does a great job of making his man work, stays in front of them and plays great help defense.

I just like when Ulis is out there. Team runs more smooth, his defense is more consistent and just makes better overall decisions.
I've been saying this since the middle of last year.

I still like Toussaint but be he disrupts his own team as much as he does the opponent.

He and Pat were the primary offenders on D last game. JBO is actually doing as well as can be expected.

I don't know why Joe still plays so recklessly on defense this far into his career. It doesn't speak well of the coaching.

Hes so undisciplined sometimes. Reaching instead of moving, chasing the ball, going under screens when everyone else is switching.

Theres no reason for it.

It was pretty telling how Fran views Ogundele right now in that when Rebraca came out with 2 quick fouls he picked Connor to sub in. I get it that NC Central was not a very tall team but even that was unexpected. When healthy, Kris is probably going to replace Rebraca to protect the rim in most cases.

I still fear what Purdue and Illinois might do with their bigs, but Ogundele doesn't seem ready and Mulvey is also very new. They may provide quick minutes and eat some fouls on Edey or Cockburn.

I guess that's not a positive post. I am optimistic to see what Kris can provide on both ends of the floor. I don't think NC Central gets as many points in the paint if he played the other night.

Ogundele may actually be better suited for those matchups, banging around in the post against those bigger guys. Smaller guys that are quicker are probably a tougher matchup right now for him. You’re right tho, doesn’t look like Fran has a lot of trust in him yet.

Maybe that's why McCaffery benched him down the stretch. That's not coaching?

NCC was ranked based on what they finished with last season. They now have 9 new players, all seniors or older. I wouldn't be surprised to see them gell into a decent team within their conference.

The B1G seems as soft as a marshmallow so far this season. Gives me hope that we can reach the middle of the conference and maybe make a tournament.

Lessens what?
This is what I put in that post. “Lessons” if the spelling is the issue you’re concerned with?

...I think that clearly lessens can be learned about the need for post players to move their feet quickly, anticipate where you need to be, know what you need to do when quick guards are driving to the basket....and learn these lessons quickly or you will be sitting on the bench in foul trouble.

The obvious is Keegan's performance....really no need to say more.

So, this team needed that test. They played a physical and athletic team on a night when the good guys weren't shooting well. They got defensive liabilities exposed.

The next best thing is, they fixed it. First, Fran tried to get after them to fix the man to man defense...subbed guys in, etc. In the second half when those first efforts didn't work, he switched to a zone AND put a defensive line up out there that go the job done.

Those moves should be a learning experience for the whole team.

Perkins clearly had his best game after the first two games where it seemed like he struggled just to play a role. In this game he played exactly the role we needed. He was a real difference maker. His defense and very efficient offense, were vital to turning things around.

Ulis played a good strong game at the point....as quick as Joe is, Ulis seems to know how to use his body and positioning better than Joe on defense. Ulis also runs the team efficiently. The next step for AU appears to be finding when, where, and how to take good shots.....as much as this schedule is not fan friendly....these are exactly the types of things that can get addressed.

Fran coached a good game....key players stepped up and took control when they needed to. Our guys played an effective zone defense.....and shot GREAT from the free throw line...wow, I did not expect this team to shoot free throws this well.

This game was uncomfortable to watch....but was good for development. Go Hawks! Can't wait for Thursday night!
Spot on. Well done!

I think part of why the offense seems to run more smooth with Ulis on the floor is that Connor is often out there with him?

Can Joe play reckless at times? Sure, but so has Ulis (he just does it less flashy).

If Perkins and Joe would play together, with Keegan, we are really sound defensively.
Those 3 were on the floor together. Joe T still was out of control.
Ulis is more of a calming, defensive presence than Joe T. I posted in another thread that Ulis's +- was second only to Tony's (both over 20), while Joe T's was by far the worst at -8. Joe T was directly responsible for that.

Yikes. He can be so good at times, and others.......well. I feel pretty comfortable with Ulis coming in for him, in those instances at least.

This. Joe could use his quickness to be a great defender, but that hasn't happened so far. IMO he was too aggressive in his defensive closeouts, against UNCC, and he couldn't stay in front of their PG. He also made some bad passes in the game. On a positive note his mid range shots looked good.

I said it before the season. If Ulis learns to score consistently he could pass Joe T as the starter.

Its questionable coaching that he still plays unprincipled defense.

He still goes under screens and that can't happen when the scheme is to switch or hard hedge.

Its a basic thing that isn't supposed to be an issue in college basketball.

Let alone trying the goofy reach around steal move all the time.

If Joe T consistently did this then it might be coaching. But he doesn't, nor is it coaching issue. That much is obvious.

Iowa shooting 66% (23-35) in the 1st half tonight vs Alabama State.

ASU shooting 50 % (13-26)

It is frustrating that JoeT still plays out of control at times, because he creates a lot of positives, like the 11 assists last night (although the way guys were shooting assists were easy to come by). The good news is that Ulis is showing that he is also a good PG, although maybe he could be a little more aggressive at times. The future at PG is bright for the Hawks. Just need Rebraca to settle in, and one of the young centers to come on. I was not impressed with Big O's play last night.

Yeah, im the idiot. 93/gm against 3 300+ ranked teams. Then pointing to maryland v george mason as some kind of example. Yeah im the idiot. Bucket getters lol so tell me what’s going to happen, without effective shooters, when we play a team that is as athletic and the same size as us? You think we’re just going to bully our way into the lane for layups? No, they’re going to pack the lane and force us to make shots.
Slim....we don't have much to go on here on 11/19. I don't quite understand unless you are just trolling here, why Hawk fans are not very or at least pleasantly pleased, optimistic with the outcome and play to date? I mean, seriously?

For that matter PU has played:
Univ. of Indianapolis
Bellarmine
Indiana State
Wright State

And no, I am not comparing this team to PU. This team is a work in progress for sure....I had no clue anyway what to expect? And averaging 93 pts/game at any level, in any league after only 4 games you have to pay attention to it....it means something good compared to the rest of the conference. They are paying attention on the Big Ten Network when they talk about BB and the Hawks.

I said this in another thread. I am very optimistic with this team.

My ability to believe what you write lessons when I see your poor grasp of the English language.

Very good...biases will do that, block one's ability to understand and interpret information for it's value. You should also note that I don't claim expertise in basketball and you can feel free to either ignore my posts or block me.

Where have i said i have no optimism for this team? I have merely pointed out we have 1 proven shooter on the team. Scoring 93/gm against a bunch of small schools that more than likely won’t even sniff the top of their little conferences isn’t that impressive. I do actually think this team will surprise a lot of people after the talent we lost after last season. But i also am pretty confident in saying we are going to have games where we will struggle to hit shots. These early games that doesn’t matter because we’re superior in every other facet of the game

We are good.....I will just leave all Hawk fans and other fans from other teams who visit this board with this clip from last night....I love it and an extremely impressive night of shooting. I hope it continues...I think it will.

We will put up worse number a large majority of our games, that's just a fact. We aren't gonna shoot 45 from 3 and almost 90 from ft all season

That would be nice though :)

One shooter? What, you haven't watched Keegan play? Or Peyton Sandford?

Learn…to….read. PROVEN shooter. Sandfort, yes he should be a very good shooter, but has he proven it outside of a few games against garbage talent? Nope. Keegan, has looked very good shooting the ball so far and hopefully that continues. His % last year was under 30% tho. Yeah I think we have some guys that can shoot the ball, but ill wait till the competition ramps up before getting overly optimistic.

He does do it often enough. Always has.

Obviously he's been shown the right way but it takes more than just showing someone to produce results.

Frans teams are consistently lacking in attention to detail on defense because he doesn't demand it. Thats questionable coaching.

They are consistently good on offense because he does demand it.

Some players are consistently good on defense. Some aren't. What's that?
