You're certainly in the minority believing that Cedar Rapids is a "shithole." Congratulations.
Lindale used to be a nice place to shop. Losing two anchor stored hurt, but mostly this sort of shit makes people avoid it. This happens too often. No thanks.
As for CR being a shithole, I will say it has changed, and not in a good way. All the crap that is happening in the schools (and Lindale today) is a function of what is happening in society.

I actually lived in Waterloo for a year or two. Worked at the Clerk of Court office and sold cemetery plots for Garden of Memories. I take back what I said.

I happen know a number of people that think CR is a shithole; but it has more to do with the people that live there than the city itself.
Cedar Rapids is nice compared to Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Waterloo and Dubuque. Went back for the 4th of July last year. That flood really allowed for a nice redevelopment of downtown.
Regular city, nothing exciting about it. I say this being born in Waterloo, grew up in Hiawatha/Toddville and now live in Omaha.

Downtown Cedar Rapids is pleasant. Staying there a week, my only gripe was that the trains ran through the middle of it all day and night long.

While I won't go as far as calling CR a shit hole it certainly isn't a shining jewel of a city. I feel like DM made huge strides the last 20 years while CR feels like it's still 1998.
I live 15 minutes from CR and there is rarely anything that makes me want to hit the town other than the occasional NEED fix.

El Super Burrito. Of the trips I've made up to Cedar Rapids in the last 10 years(and there haven't been many), that's 75% of them. CR is about as blah as it gets.
