I was thinking about him the other night:

4th
2nd
2nd?
2nd?

Not to be a Debbie Downer but there's no way he's going to beat Zain. Is Zain 149 for life?

I hate to think about Sorensen not getting a National Championship.

Anyone see it happening?

I think Zain is a career 149 with sights on a 65kg freestyle future. He sure looks unbeatable but stranger things have happened.

Zain moved up from 141 his true freshman season and has held 149 the past 3 seasons (includes RS year). I don't think he'll be growing out of 149. While it doesn't seem probable that Sorensen could win an NC stranger things have happened. Looking forward to the match up in a couple weeks.

I agree Zain probably doesn't move up. That said, BS doesn't have to be the one to beat him...as we all know the ncaa tournament is notorious for huge upsets.

Agree, I don't think Zain or Sorensen are moving up from 49. I wouldn't pick it, but you never know. Crazier things have happened than a Sorensen over Retherford type of upset.

Hell, never would have guessed McD would not AA his senior year. Crazy sport we love, nothing is guaranteed.

McD had a torn labrum, so yeah, injuries can certainly derail anyone's hopes. But if he stays healthy, it's hard to see anyone beating Zain this year.

Maybe the Johnny Hendricks v Mark Perry analogy could be a model for Sorensen. After losing a bunch (something like 6 or 7 straight) to Hendricks, Perry finally beat him for a national championship. Here's hoping.

Ya but Zain and Nolf have majored everyone so far. Who has ever done that?

If this guy can lose, anyone can

A while back a lot were saying after Metcalf won the Hodge in 2008 no way anyone is going to beat him the final two years. Not one is invincible. No just Caldwell, but Palmer made things pretty interesting in 2010.

That's what is so great about sports. There are no guarantees. Anything can happen on any given day. There is a small chance that Sorensen could beat Retherford, just as there is a small chance that Collica could beat Sorensen today.

For Sorensen to have any shot at Zain he will need to be able to match the activity and pace going at him just as hard. Trying to keep it close and steal it will not work. Owings did not beat Gable by trying to steal it, he took it.

I think this is pretty spot on. You can bet Sorenson has been pretty focused on training for Retherford for over a year now. I expect him to keep it closer than many think.

Also, Collica and Mayes are nipping at Sorenson's heels. I would not pick them, but this is D1 wrestling. The list is endless of guys we thought were unbeatable who dropped matches.

I'm good with final chances every year - just wish he would stack up bonus wins in the wake...
A lot of people on here post without much thought, so I won't slam you. You might want to check on who are team leaders are in bonus point victories.

Also, why is a northwestern fan on here stroking Nolf and Zain? I wonder if he realizes Gman has bonused all but 1 guy. So his % is going to be right there with wrestlecats golden boys.

Wow fellas, as pointed out above, that's why they strap on the headgear. I for one am nervous when any of our guys take to the mat no matter the records. DT got stuck by Bubba...I rest my case.

A fat kid standing around who beat a beast (who just had shoulder surgery) because of a new stupid rule.

Sorry, I congratulate Roulan, and none of that was his fault. He made the finals and won. I wish he would have done more than stand there for 6 minutes(not an easy thing to do with AK). He also medaled in the next olympics so is is obviously skilled.

I like Greco and that was the kind of match that makes Olympic wrestling look bad.

Yeah collica looking much better at 149

2018 - murderers row - wishful thinking maybe
Lee 125 - champ
Turk 133 - Low AA
Sorensen 141 - champ
Kemerer 149 - champ - has more offense
Marinelli 157 - 1st or second
Young 165 - high AA

Love BS I do not think he has enough to beat Zain. We talk about the upsets but they are rare. Gable lost once and won all the other times. Not good odds for Gable losing. Not good odds for BS beating Zain.

Lee 125 - champ--Will Redshirt
Turk 133 - Low AA--Has a tough time making 141
Sorensen 141 - champ--Cannot cut to 141
Kemerer 149 - champ - has more offense--Will be at 157
Marinelli 157 - 1st or second--will be at 165
Young 165 - high AA--Will be at 174

Other than that, looks good ;)

So a lot of people comment without reading the post they are replying to. BS got 1 bonus point at 2016 NCAAs. I would think a champion contender should get more than that. 2015 he got 2 Boner points. So that = 3 in 2 seasons if my math is correct. That is my point!

2nd is a crap shoot with no offense from the feet.

Ugly. No set ups. When you know the guy is a roller and you have no stall calls just pick him up and walk around the mat until they call you for stalling. Oh, that does not sound like Iowa wrestling. Ignore that. Set up a few shots in regulation and pull the trigger. PULL THE TRIGGER.

Two matches last year & Zain won both 4-0 and 10-1.

For Sorenson to think about an upset with Zain, he first has to figure out how to score an offensive point against Zain.

Zain will dictate pace and not allow Sorenson to get to an 1-1 SV / TB match.

Can't disagree with you there. I'm just hoping Sorensen can still get a 3 seed at NCAAs. I have faith he will win right the ship and make the finals, if he is opposite side of bracket from Retherford.

I think the OSU slap/punch to the forward kept BS and some other Hawks away long enough to shut down shot attempts and keep them from wearing the cowboys out. Need to find an answer to that or ride a heck of a lot better in OT.

As long as he wins out(other than Rutherford) he WILL GET THE 3.
As of right now, that's not correct. This scenario gives Sorensen 3 losses before nationals. Zain and Collica are both undefeated. Mayes has 1 loss, to Collica.

Mayes still has Collica again, Oliver and Thomsen in duals, plus Oliver or Thomsen again at MACs, so he could get to 3 losses before nationals. Then Sorensen can get the 3 -- especially if Mayes loses at MACs.

It would help Sorensen if Iowa draws Missouri at NWCA Duals, but that's probably not the preferred path for the team.
