Casual wrestling fan here looking for some insight into the spiral ride. Watching the OSU match on Sunday and a lot of our guys were trying this technique. Gilman was the only one who seemed to have any success with it. Anyway, I don’t know much about the advantages or disadvantages of utilizing the spiral ride and was wondering if some of the experts here could educate me? From my uneducated point of view the decision to try the spiral ride so often might have cost Iowa a couple matches, possibly the meet.

In my unprofessional opinion it is a good ride for stopping a guys initial move or to ride a guy out at the end of the period. Other than that I dont see a lot of use. That being said some individuals can make anything work because of body type, style, etc.

Tactics...if done right, it puts a lot of pressure on the neck and shoulders which can pay dividends in the third period. Even if a guy escapes, that's a lot of weight to carry to get up. IMO, you should never cut a guy without paying the price.

I don't even like the name. To me it's not a ride. Great way to neutralize your opponent's initial move and get them extended. I used it allot with the goal being to extend , block the knee and get the near wrist , which leads to lots of scoring combinations.

I agree with this. Some use it just to ride, but those that are good at it do one of two things. First, like you said they use it as a break down to get the near wrist. From there you can work arm bars or tilts, whatever you prefer. Second, lots of wrestlers spiral a guy into a crab ride position or throw legs and then work moves from there.

It is as good of a first move off the whistle on top as anything else.

If you are lucky they will sit out and try to scoot then you are in prime position for a suck back and some cheap back points.

Basically this. Pressure forward on the upper back and neck, with your other arm controlling the hips thru the crotch eliminates their ability to move, (standup, switch, sitout). This is used primarily to slow them down, then bring to the mat and work for your turn. IMO of course.

You probably remember Pee-wee wrestling like it was yesterday. I know those were the glory days for me. 120 matches per season and my no food from my parents for days so I could be a pee-wee state champ.

It's a very solid breakdown. But when used for extended periods of time it's nothing but a stall ride. Sorenson loves it.

It's a solid ride when used in conjunction with other breakdowns. Lots of guys have used it with the "claw ride" instead of just bumping under the arm to score points. Stieber and Jon Reader were both really good at using a claw/spiral ride to work tilts from top.

I taught my oldest boy a claw spiral ride and he would flatten kids to their stomachs with it all the time.

Steiber was great at it but he learned it from Dake. Tilt them for some backs and then roll em around and stick them with it.
