Anyone been out? The water is still a little chilly out on the western side of the state and the bite has been very slow. Just curious if anyone is having success yet.

I've 95% been working when at our place so far, maybe have made 20 casts just from the dock (boat isn't there yet). Water is still a bit cold for swim bait action, should pick up in the next couple weeks.

I took two of the kids out to a small tributary of the Upper Iowa for an hour yesterday. They were throwing 1/2 crawlers on a plain hook with no weight and a small float. I had a copper john nymph on the fly rod. One kid caught a big sucker and had about 10 trout hooked, but not brought to hand. The younger kid wasn't able to bring one in on his own, but I hooked him a rainbow on the fly rod and he brought it in. I caught a sucker, a chub and a nice brown trout.

Those days will be gone before you know and you will be looking back at how much you miss being at the ballpark/fields.
so true

I tell my co-workers that same thing, life is crazy now but in a few years I'll wish I was still sharing all those car rides to practices and games :(

Here's what's sadder to think about. You rarely know when is the last time you will watch your kid pitch or play a certain position or play the sport at all, as it is happening. An injury can happen, they lose interest, etc. and then poof, it is over and you think about how much you missed being a part of it all.

With a 2oz shrimp from shore at dusk or dawn I can have around a 15lb yellowfin hooked within 15 minutes. Then 10-25 minutes later its tired out and I can bring it in. Fishing around Iowa is relaxing and enjoyable, nothing about catching a yellowfin is relaxing. I like relaxing fishing from a boat on a lake much more. But the yellowfin does taste better.

you need to learn better. Where did you fish and what did you use for bait?

Rivers and ponds.

I tried the rubber worms and had 0 success.

I used plastic crawdads in ponds and caught fish but those ponds got filled with algae and became unfishable.

If you lived around here I would invite you out to the farm to fish. I think it would be a hoot to hang out out.

Once you win the lottery, you can send your jet...

What type of fish do you catch? I like small mouth bass. They fight. I call them "Pit Bulls."

I used to catch sunfish often.

large mouth, cats, crappies in the ponds. smallies and sturgeon in shallow rivers. Cats, pikes, and bowfin in deeper rivers.

Sharks and sperm and blue whales in the ocean.

It sounds like you're a real angler.

My fishing name is "Angler Saxon."

My co-angler was "Fish King."
