Good thing our fans know when and when not to storm the court ;)

SAINT BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -- Mo Alie-Cox scored 20 points, JeQuan Lewis sank a clutch free throw to force overtime and VCU slipped past St. Bonaventure in the extra period for an 83-77 win Saturday.

Leading most of the game, VCU (18-5, 8-2 Atlantic 10) fell behind with just half a second left in regulation when Matt Mobley sank a step-back 3-pointer to put St. Bonaventure on top 66-65. But the Bonnies (14-8, 6-4) were assessed a technical foul when their student section stormed the court with time still on the clock and Lewis hit the free throw to force overtime.

"One of the security guards actually had the ball while everybody was storming the court," Lewis told The Richmond Times-Dispatch after the game. "No whistle had been blown yet. Doug [Brooks] literally ran and snatched the ball out of his hands, and then he ran to the baseline and threw it in (to Jonathan Williams). That's when the whistle starting blowing."

VCU coach Will Wade said he asked the referees to call for a technical foul "because there was still time on the clock when the bench and the students had stormed the floor.

"By rule, that's an administrative technical. We brought that to the attention of the officials, and they called it," Wade said.

The Atlantic 10 Conference released a statement Saturday night saying it was the "correct call" to assess a technical foul shot to VCU: "The conference office has reviewed the end of the game, and spoken to the Atlantic 10 coordinator of officiating, who verified that it was in fact the correct call."

In the extra period, Williams got a three-point play to put VCU ahead for good, 71-68. The Bonnies twice cut the deficit back to a single point before the Rams got a three-point play from Justin Tillman, followed by 3-pointer from Lewis to go up 79-74 with 1:49 left, and then protected it the rest of the way.

Tillman finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Lewis had 16 points and Doug Brooks 10.

Mobley finished with a career-high 34 points and set a St. Bonaventure record with nine 3-pointers. Jaylen Adams finished with 21 points for the Bonnies.

Watch the film and you see VCU inbound the ball and the clock went to zeros??? So the fans thought it was over.

I would have to disagree with that call. The fans saw it went to zero and ran onto the court. IF anything you get everyone off the floor, put time back on and give VCU the ball. No technical needed.

Agreed, DavenportHawk8. That's just plain stupid to call that technical, and for the conference office to say it was "the right call" makes it absolutely ludicrous. Where's the fairness in that? St. Bonnie deserved the win, and the officials took it away. That's just plain BS.

Similar things have happened fairly often in football and basketball without anyone being assessed a penalty, and the team that deserved to win did. Not this time. I hope the officials are really proud of themselves.

I pretty much agree with this. It seems there are officials that wish to be part of the game. IMO it the officials do a good job, you are hardly aware of them. No doubt, basketball is the most difficult game to officiate, but this call should not have been made.

I understand very unfortunate for the Bonnies and hardly seems fair. But...if the rules call for a technical, why is this on the refs? Aren't many of us always saying rules are rules? Change the rules then.

Not the fans fault. The entire St bonnie bench ran onto the court with .4 still on the clock. 100% their fault, the fans wouldn't have done anything had the bench stayed where they should have been.

Actually, they do not show VCU inbounding. Watch the video again and you will see for yourself. Also, there was .4 seconds on the clock when the shot went in.

However, when the announcer said that VCU inbounded, there were St Bonnie bench players (and people in suit and tie from the bench) still on the court and there were some fans on the court as well. If the rules state that a technical should be called when the game is still in progress with fans and bench players illegally on the court, then they got the technical foul call right. And as you saw in the orig post, the league said the officials got the call right, too.

There is time on the clock, VCU inbounds, yet there are St Bonnie coaches and bench players and fans on the court. If the rules say a technical should be called, what did the officials do wrong? Maybe, instead, the FOCUS should be on what the Bonnie bench and the Bonnie fans did wrong? Maybe the officials did not cost the Bonnies the W; maybe it was boneheaded bench people and fans?

And VCU does it again! Talk about grabbing 2 victories from the jaws of defeat. This time, GW scores with .4 left and thinks they won. Then, VCU draws the foul on the inbound play.

FYI: Larry Scirotto also worked this game (he was the 'little guy' who worked the Minnesota debacle tonight) and his crew "will be disciplined for not immediately stopping the game for disruption of play.” The conference said the discipline will be handled internally.

It was the correct call.
There was time left on the clock and VCU deserved a chance to win. Instead, the actions of the St. Bonnie bench and fans nearly cost them that chance. Players, play to the buzzer. Bench, know how much time is on the clock. Fans, stay off the court. It's that simple.

Watch the near side of the court at the :17 sec mark of this video. The only people on the court when VCU in bounds are the refs, the 10 VCU/St Bonny players and two cameramen (WTH?). The ref even signals the clock to start with the in bounds pass.

Then every foul where the defender clearly grabs the waist or jersey of the opposing player should be ruled as intentional... it rarely is
