Just read somewhere that St. John beat Imar at the Midlands during Imar's redshirt year. Do you think St. John in his prime beats Imar last season? I think so, but Imar's victory over Ness in the Big 10 Finals was extremely impressive. I think it would be close, which says a lot because Imar is only going to be a sophomore.

I'm a big St. John fan, so i'm a little biased, but i think DSJ was an absolute beast. 2 time finalist, and champ. One of the best scramblers in the game. I think this video says a lot about St John. Not many guys can go toe to toe with David taylor and actually have a shot at winning and keeping it competitive. How many guys do you know of over the course of Taylors career to hold him to a reg dec loss multiple times, and have a shot at winning.
St. John was an absolute warrior. But, with that said, I don't like the match up. The true freshman I Mar he beat was a mere shadow of the past season's version. It also doesn't help that I don't think St. John was ever 100% going into the NCAA tournament(except maybe his junior season).
The senior version would have been throttled. The junior version would have made things interesting. Unlike, Green(basically the only guy to wrestle a competitive match with I Mar) I don't see how St. John would have wrestled I Mar in space and kept away from the underhooks. The match would have had many offensive attacks from I Mar and it would have to come down to how/if St. John could funk from those positions. Note, Ness was not successful one bit trying to funk from those positions.
I wouldn't count St. John out in any match. His greatest asset was his will to win. Still, the match up makes me think of Apollo's Manager in Rocky II.

St. John shut down Derringer I think every time they wrestled a healthy St John would of won IMO.
everybody falls in love with the latest greatest, I would not sell st. john short tough hard nosed.
Have to go with IMAR. However, DSJ would have presented match up problems for IMAR in the sense that DSJ was a sticky wrestler...when he was on his game, he was very tough to get a clean shot on. If DSJ could slow the match down, he would have had a shot.
I think IMar is way to athletic for DSJ and just about anyone else out there. He is way to explosive. If you guys think Green was a bad matchup for DSJ, what do you think IMar would be.
St. John was pretty tuff his Junior year but I would still take I-Mar. He made a huge jump in ability from his true freshman year and had possibly the greatest freshman season in the history of college wrestling.
Well Dieringer isn't any good so......................
I think people forget how good St. John was, because he had such a lousy Senior year. Could he beat last years Imar? Of course he could.
Anyone know if St. John is wrestling at the US Open? Maybe he'll meet IMar there or at the trials. Would love to see them wrestle again.

This year we will be sending out the usual 4, Metcalf, McDonough, Ramos and Keddy.... we have also added two old faces to the training in Iowa City. Derek St. John and Dan Dennis have been training in Iowa City and will make the trip to the US Open with the club.
