Stanford Coach: Ferentz is Icon, Belongs in Hall of Fame

Classy comments by Shaw. And Ferentz clearly is a great coach and perfect for Iowa during the past couple decades. But I don't see him as Hall of Fame material.

I can see him making the College Football HOF. I don't think the threshold is extremely high.

This season cemented KF as a HOF coach. His resume compared to others there is good. Another good 5-year run to finish his career and his case will be even stronger.

You could be right. Honestly, I'm not real familiar with who has been enshrined and who hasn't. I just assumed it would take more than a couple of conference championships to get it done. He's obviously got a lot of wins, but I figured you'd need more hardware for the HOF.

???
He's been a very good/solid coach but Hall of Fame ? He's 139-107 with 2 BIG championships.

Hall of Fame minimum criteria for a coach is 10 years, 100 games and a 60% winning record.

Yes it is but there is a special comittee that allows for those below that to be inducted on a case by case basis. Fry is like .565 and he's in. Not saying KF gets in but the .600 isn't cut and dry.

With likely four top 10 finishes and three big four bowl games

I would also like to add if we don't win the Rose Bowl we finish 12-2 without a signature win and KF will have a 6-7 Bowl game record with four straight loses. As of now not HOF.

This isn't like the MLB HOF, he's a shoe in unless something goes terribly wrong the next couple years, but even then...

You mean five Top 10 finishes, actually maybe five Top 8 finishes depending on this year. AP - #8 in 2002, 2003, and 2004, #7 in 2009.

Hate to play the "Iowa" card here but to do what he has done at Iowa is pretty damn special. Was I pissed last year? Yes. But am I impressed at his willingness to make changes this long into his tenure to improve the program? Hell yes. I think he will be in the HOF. Not to downgrade the college fb HOF but it is not as exclusive as the pro fb HOF. He will be in in my opinion and what a great thing for him and the University.

Add to your comments that he has been named BIG COY 4x, National COY 2x - including the Dodd Trophy this year, has gone 124-67 in the last 15 years, has been instrumental in upgrading Iowa's facilities to state-of-the-art status, and is a community leader. Coach Ferentz epitomizes what it takes to reach the CFB HOF and the highest ranks of his profession. If the Hawks win the Rose Bowl this year, he moves into # 2 on my list of all-time great Hawkeye coaches just behind Howard Jones. Right now, he sits at 4 just behind Evy and Fry. That's rarefied air and the others are in the HOF. Happy New Year all and ... Go HAWKS!

This is possibly a question for its own string, but out of respect for you Hawk fans I'm not going to start an ISU post on this board this week.

Would Ferentz have achieved anything close to his current success if Clones hired him?

Why/why not?

Serious question.

In the current era coaches simply do not last as long as he has. He is in just for not being fired by now.

If he snags the signature Rose Bowl win...(and it is the signature win every coach wants)...and he can go at least 8-4 the rest of his career, he'll be a HoF shoe-in.

two? I only recall one. HOF coaches win national titles, have long lines of signature wins.

Of course. Loved nationally. Respected nationally. Makes Hawks and Eagles out of supposed turkeys ( 2 stars ). Took over a team in the basement ( horrible talent left by Fry ). Develops tons of players the right way and sends guys to the nfl. KF will continue winning next three years and then retire. HOF - yep! Deserves it .

Why don't you consider the road win at NW a signature win?

As of right now I don't consider it a signature win till the outcome of their game against Tenn. If Northwestern drops that game I could see them dropping to about 20-21 in the final rankings. Would a win over a 20-21 ranked team without a bowl victory be a signature season win for you ? If they take care of business against Tenn. then yes it would be a signature win.
