Iahawkeyes17 posted this article under another topic but I thought it deserved it’s own thread as it lays out more clearly than we’ve heard from Fran before about the starters on this year’s team and the strengths and weaknesses of the newbies and how they’ll fit in.

The 4 returning starters are pointed out: Woody, Uthoff, Jok, Gesell.

“As for the starting lineup, the final slot likely comes down to Clemmons, a senior, and 6-9 sophomore forward Dominique Uhl. Clemmons has 25 career starts, mostly at point guard. Uhl averaged 10 minutes a game.

“Obviously it’s (Uhl) and Clemmons,” McCaffery said. “If (Uhl is) in there, we’re bigger. If Clemmons is in there, we’re smaller. Clemmons is a senior, too.””

As Fran notes:

“If you play essentially three guards — which is what you’d do if Pete’s playing the three — what you need to be able to make sure is that you can still rebound. Now if (Jok’s) playing the three and someone else is playing the two, that’s going to really strengthen our 3-point shooting, especially with Jarrod at the four spot. We really have a lot of weapons from 3-point range.”

Not earth-shattering revelations, but it’s clearly laid out that whether Uhl or Clemmons starts depends on whether we lose/gain more in rebounding with Jok at the 3 or 3-point shooting with Uhl at forward and Jok at the 2.

About the newbies, Fran has lots to say positively, as we’ve come to expect. But the positives seem to jive with the general opinion I’ve read here and elsewhere- nothing that most haven’t agreed with already. Reservations about players are there but generally subtle concerning defense and experience. It will be interesting to see who emerges in the 7-9 spots in the rotation. Excited for the start of the season!
