Stoll named Wrestler of the Week

Really enjoyed watching him wrestle against OSU and ISU this year. He has brought a lot of excitement to the heavyweight class.

It would be huge for the team if he can find his way onto the All American platform this season. I don't think he'd stand a chance against the top 4 guys but 5-8 is not out of the question.

Todd, I love the blog and appreciate the work you put in. However the titles of these threads are a little misleading. How about something like: "Sam Stoll Iowa Wrestling Fan Blog's Wrestler of the Week"?

I am very excited to see Sam's progress this year. Would think that he will be the team's most improved from beginning to end.

I wouldn't count him out against anyone with the new rules in place.

Upsets happen but the top 4 guys are just bad matchups for him athletically. Someone like Gwiaz would likely score a handful of TDs against Stoll at this point. Walz and Coon are both lean and athletic wrestlers too.

Blaize Cabell will be an interesting matchup for Stoll because he's essentially a poor man's version of the top 3 guys. If Stoll really struggles with him then I'd have a hard time believing he can make a run at the top 3-4.

I know a lot of people had opinions about whether Sam would be able to transition from being a HS Pin Machine to Div-1, and many took a more negative tone last year at midlands when he went for a throw and got stuck, but in looking at his entire body of work, he looks to be a Hvwt willing to take some shots and along with it, some risk. Which is something pretty rare among 285's these days.

While he did fine in his RS year, I think he used it to get acclimated and will be ready to roll this year. He has proven to be a smart wrestler, taking very little risk at the Grapple, and that helped preserve his teams victory. While it's very very very (3 verys) early, I like what Sam has shown throughout his career and believe he is the next great Iowa heavyweight. As he gains experience his risk level will be more calculated by seasons end, he may just reach levels that many think are out of reach right now.
