People tend to believe sexuality in straight and gay men is a lot more rigid than women’s, but perhaps that’s not the case.
In new research, it found a lot more straight guys are watching gay porn than you might think. And on the other hand, many more gay guys are watching a straight couple on screen as well.
Published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, researchers led by Martin J Downing surveyed 821 men about their porn-viewing habits.
It found 21% of heterosexual men had watched same-sex male porn in the past six months, compared to 98.3% of gay men and 96% of bi men.
But otherwise, 55% of gay men reported watching opposite-sex porn, compared to 98.5% of straight men and 88.3% of bisexual men.
And while it’s obviously interesting that men may be more fluid than first thought, it appears from this study bisexual men are more likely to view gay porn rather than straight porn.
Downing said his team was not surprised by the amount of gay men who watch a man and woman having sex.
‘Sexual attractions and behaviors are more than just identity,’ he told Cosmopolitan. ‘Research has shown that some gay men are attracted to or find heterosexual and masculine men more attractive.’
And for the straight men watching two men, Downing believes it’s not uncommon for men who identify as straight to be attracted to or hook up with other men.
‘Never ever in a million years feeling an ounce of attraction for the same sex [is not a prerequisite for being, and identifying as, straight],’ Downing added.
The survey also researched attitudes to whether condoms interfere with the enjoyment of porn.
Of gay men viewing anal sex between two men, 64% preferred it without condoms, 29.2% didn’t care, and 6.4% preferred condoms.
