"When the University of Iowa football team kicks off its season Saturday, it will mark the first of seven weekends that could each pump tens of millions of dollars into the local economy, according to a new study.

The study, issued Thursday by UI and the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, found that the economic impact of a seven-game home UI football schedule on Johnson County exceeds $110 million.

Surveys were conducted by the CVB and graduate students in UI's School of Urban and Regional Planning Oct. 10-11, 2014, during a weekend in which the Iowa football team hosted Indiana...

Josh Schamberger, president of the Iowa City/Coralville CVB, said the two most important variables at play when it comes to impact on local businesses are how well the Hawkeyes are playing, and who the opponent is.

"If the team is strong and there's a lot of excitement and we have full sellouts and people are scalping tickets, that means you have a lot of people in town spending a lot of money," Schamberger said. "The same goes for the opponent. If you're playing somebody like Wisconsin, or even a nonconference opponent like next year's game against North Dakota State, they're bringing a lot of fans. Somebody like Tennessee Tech, not a lot of fans."
