STYLE POINTS: Does New Kirk go after them?

I don't think he's going to have the luxury to choose too many of these games, maybe Purdue. Iowa is going to be in a dog fight in at least 3 of the final 5 games.

No, winning is winning. His quote after the Northwestern game was something like, "I'd have taken a 1 point win."

And he is undoubtedly correct. We are the Big Ten, we control our destiny.

Why do you feel we'll be in a dog fight?

We've already played the 8th, 16th, 17th, and 33rd best defenses in the Nation in terms of total defense. Still on our schedule are 28, 91, 98, 104 and 119. The 104 and 119 are our next two games.

Unless the defense falls apart, all things indicate we are about to put up some huge point totals. I'd be surprised if we don't score 35+ in at least 4 of the 5 remaining games.

Define style points. Are style points going on the road and beating a Top 25 team by 30? Or are style points going for the extra TD near the end of the game to win 42-7 instead of 35-7?

Because these two remain: Minnesota, Nebraska.

If you are looking at anything beyond that you are a fool.

I say style points are meaningless. If we lose a game our playoff hopes are gone.

I hear what you're saying but OSU probably would not have bypassed Baylor and TCU for the 4th playoff spot last year if it wasn't for their 59-0 pasting of Wisky. Most people don't like pouring it on another team but the sad truth is that in today's playoff scenario its sometimes a necessary option.

Not really. I don't think you will be viewed any more favorably with an extra 4th quarter touchdown. It didn't help Michigan St Much vs. Indiana. All the games are on tv now. I remember KOK calling a WR reverse pass with mcnutt in 2010 when we were up 38-0. I still don't think Dantonio has forgotten about that and he called an exotic with a big lead when they came back the next year. I haven't seen anything similar since

We will keep running the ball. If there are huge holes and they can't stop us, Kirk will put up as many points as they will give us.

I agree with most on here. What the hell is a style point? If iowa wins all 15 games by a point, does anybody care?
Iowa is not out to impress the AP, they are out to figure out how to win games. As I said earlier, 'stats are for losers'! T.J. Rubley and Kenny Shed hung this on their lockers in LA, GreenBay, Denver, Oakland, etc. As long as you win (the only stat that matters) who gives a sheet about impressing AP voters.

Having watched the other teams play a few times, it's obvious every game is going to be a fight through all 60 minutes. "More" points would be style points. Let's just dream about that.

Well...if I was a cautious coach and wanted to get to 12-0...I would be cautious but also allow the team to be who there are, that is, what got them to this point...

Also...my focus wouldn't be on big scores but on allowing my best players to heal and play, but not be beaten down...save some fuel in the tank...this is KF's chance to go for it... Self preservation of the best players is paramount, especially for a team like Iowa that isn't loaded 3 deep with talent everywhere.

Turnovers-injuries-penalties...will mean more than coaching philosophy...

Could someone give me the style points scoring system?

What are the style point standings as of today?

I'm sure kirk didn't want to put up 62 points against North Texas. He can't prevent pick 6's and bad defense. Whatever happens... happens. We don't need style points, just win.

The only way style points would matter is if you get 5 power five teams who are undefeated. If that is the case (unlikely as it is) then yes style points matter. I sincerely believe that is how OSU got into the playoff. They along with TCU and Baylor all had one loss I believe and OSU had to put a whooping on Wisconsin to look good.

We will keep running the ball. If there are huge holes and they can't stop us, Kirk will put up as many points as they will give us.

THIS. Kirk will definitely allow GD to keep running the ball...However, that being said, I think GD will have the freedom to run play action and other pass plays to keep scoring drives going on 3rd downs. If the team executes well...routes will happen. But I don't see Kirk ever signing off on fake punts or onside kicks with a large lead. But maybe he will surprise us all!

If "style points" = big score differential, then people who think KF would go for that, don't know KF at all. Not in his way of thinking. In his mind, if the team is up by 21 points or more, that is an opportunity to have the 2s play and gain experience, not an opportunity to run up the score some more. I don't recall the exact numbers, but at least 2 TDs in the North Texas game were scored by our 2s, for example. Many of the 2s played in the 4th quarter of the NW game as well. I'm sure there are more examples of this during this season.

If style points didn't matter, Michigan State would still be ranked #2 in the nation, not #7 or 8.

Really? And I'm sure you're going to provide evidence to support your theory. Like I've said before, I really, really hope you are not actually an atty. But then again, attys are some of the most ignorant scum I've ever met. Carry on.
