According to an Al Jazeera report I'm watching, over 2 million Americans are infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria each year and 23,000 die.

Wow!

The main culprit is believed to be the overuse of antibiotics in raising animals for food. The drugs speed growth and also make it possible to crowd more animals into the same space by cutting disease risk. 75% of all the antibiotics sold in the US go for use on animals raised for food.

Definitely wow, although the main culprit is still up for debate.
Here's a link http://www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/ that attributes it to medicine prescribed to humans for the past 70 years and includes additional info on the antibiotics in our food supply.

Then they stop taking it as soon as they feel better.

Even worse, Wendy: when they tell you it's viral and still give you a prescription for antibiotics. :)
