Talent and sponsors needed for the PTL

http://www.press-citizen.com/story/...king-players-join-hawkeyes-panthers/28533321/

I sure hope players from local schools get the word that the PTL is looking for more guys. Don't know if maybe part of the problem is having to drive up to Waterloo three times, but the better the talent the better the games.

A question, does anyone know if there are restrictions as to how far away a person can live and still be allowed to play?
They added two more teams this year, so that is 20 more players needed.

This is what's posted on the NCAA Site. Within 100 miles of either the athlete's home of record or the institution where they are a regular student, unless no league exists in either. Then it's the closest available to their home of record.

That should be enough territory to find players. Plenty of small colleges and Jucos. I'm sure if the word gets out plenty of decent talent will apply. I hope I'm there to watch Gatens school some of our young wings.

The word also got out what type of dumpster fire this league was. The director treated kids in the past like he was the commissioner of the NBA. There is a reason they are having trouble getting sponsors and players...it starts at the top

1st year I played was 1988 and I think that was the 2nd year. Larson has been running it the entire time, even when he was fighting cancer.

The lesson here is that cocoem is a douche.

It was started by Larson at the request of Dr. Tom from what I understand. 1987. Coach Davis wanted a semi-structured summer league where the guys could play real basketball including refs and such. I certainly watched you play many times Legend, but not knowing you, I still say you stunk! :) But lucky you for being on the court with Clay Hargrave, all the Raveling recruits, Mike Gatens (only guy I've ever seen who's face could get red quicker than McCaffery's) Greg Stokes I believe played.

City High in the heat. Later on stuff like Jepsen busting backboards and UNI's Jason Reese getting ejected from what seemed like almost every game. Fun times.

Another example of how big of idiot you are.

My bad you played in the league so it is awesome. It is still a joke

So you tried out one year and didn't get picked - is that what we can learn from this?

Isnt this the league where most Hawkeye players put up unGodly stats, only for many posters to start hyping said players as the second coming? LOL. Sounds like it's only going to get better.

Nope, but am way to familiar with his setup. It is bad basketball. If you are one of those guys that want to sit there and get all bunched up over a Dickerson type in a setting that is not even close to basketball then go ahead. There is a reason he is having trouble getting sponsors and players. What do you think it is?

I've learned in 30 years of practice that people who really hate a specific lawyer have usually had their asses handed to them by the lawyer(s) against whom they harbor personal animosity. Randy Larson is a great guy that has done great things to develop and improve Iowa Hawkeye and HS basketball. The Prime Time League is one of the most impressive marketing and development inventions from which Iowa has benefited in the last almost 30 years.

Never been in trouble in which a lawyer was needed....so my opinions is based solely on the fact that the league is having trouble. I assume you are a friend, so I am sure he is a great guy.

Could CMac or weiskamp (sp?) play in the ptl or is there an age limit

I suspect that AAU ball will take up much of the same time.

As to Larson. Not going to say a word but the PTL did go from six teams to eight and that has something to do with it. I still think the drive time to Waterloo may play a small part. And, there have been infrequent times in the past where sponsors didn't show up until late. I mostly just started this threat to help put the word out to players that there is a better chance to make a team this year.

Let me also add there are concerns that the extensive road construction may keep people away too this summer.

The best way into N.L. right now is via Dubuque St.

Wasn't there some talk a year or so ago about a small college player summer league based in CR? That would take players away from the PTL if it had got started. (don't know) Oh, and to those who seem to pop up and disparage the PTL every year: how is it different than any other summer league as far as mostly offense?

Weren't the PTL tryouts Saturday morning? I'm assuming right now that the point of this thread- lack of sponsors and players for the new 8-team format, is the reason we haven't heard about the rosters for the first PTL games starting this Thursday?

I am not sure they've even drafted yet. The original plan called for tryouts at the Fieldhouse, on Sunday I think, but the cost was prohibitory. I could be wrong. But I'm sure there will be sponsors and plenty of players to go around. The reason I even passed the news on from another article was to help get word out that players were needed.

According to the article cited in your OP, the tryouts were this past Saturday, June 13. Has that changed? Are the opening games still Thursday, June 18?

They have to fill up 8 teams due to a new NCAA rule. In the past, incoming freshmen were not considered part of the rule that limits 2 players per school on any team. That rule has been changed and now they are considered to be part of the team. That forced the league to expand to 8 teams to allow the entire roster to be able to play. The problem is then you have to find more players to fill out a roster. Tryouts were Saturday and they usually draft on Sunday, but what I've heard is they need more players. One of the other things has also happened is former Iowa players who might be back for the summer are discouraged by their agents from participating.

Ah, that's right. I don't know why I kept/keep thinking they were changed from yesterday to Saturday. Getting old I guess. But, yeah, the games are starting this Thursday. I'm looking forward to reading plenty of reports about the new guys!

Here's the PTL site. Doesn't mention when the draft will be held.

I hope:

Whoever drafts Christian Williams does so with the intent of playing him at point guard.
Dale Jones goes to a team with other bigs so he can play the four.
For some reason I'd like to see either Gesell or Clemmons on the same team as Fleming.

Oh, and to those shooting video...please, please POST LOTS OF THEM!!!

The PTL site is notoriously late in posting new information. The first published info about the PTL is usually the local online news media.

I think Christian Williams is more likely to be drafted as a PG than Dale Jones actually playing PF in this year's PTL. And I hope it turns out that way. The 2 big questions I'd like to know about these 2 guys right now are: can Williams actually play the point? and can Jones defend the post? Of course you're only going to get glimpses of the actual answers in the PTL, but it's a start. Also, in this league, you're going to see Jones shoot some 3s whatever position he plays. You'd like to see Fleming with MG or Sapp, or maybe Price, so you can see what AF can do just playing SG without having to distribute like he often had to do for Oak Hill.

With the expanding of the PTL into 8 teams, the first change you're likely to see is smaller guys playing the post- there just won't be that many bigs to go around, especially with guys like Gabe and Tuttle graduating. For that reason, although Uthoff is obviously the best player in the league this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Woody as the first player drafted. He often dominated last year's PTL and there won't be as many guys to slow him down this summer, especially with his senior experience.

As far as video, wasn't there a live online feed last year? I remember trying to access it and being mostly unsuccessful. But technology keeps improving.

Why the heck doesn't Larsen update this stuff. Seems like every year it is a big secret or something.
