Tariffs on pharmaceuticals

The fact that American politicians put our nation in this position in the first place is the real issue.

Overreliance on another country for items so critical is a total failure.
That is capitalism at its finest. You don’t seem to support capitalism in this area. May I ask what other socialist avenues you’d like to pursue in the area of healthcare? Or do you just want to make a fake point on a message board?

It's a national security issue. I know you know this.

No, I simply added that how we do medicine is a problem
Tariffs aren't going to fix that. They (USA gov't) don't negotiate drug prices like the rest of the world does and that was a direct result of a GOP Prescription Drug bill signed by W.

Skyrocketing Pharmaceutical Imports to the U.S. Endanger National Security

  • U.S. pharmaceutical imports have skyrocketed in the last ten years, with imports from China, India and Mexico leading the surge.
  • India and China are increasingly the leading U.S. source for generic pharmaceuticals, which account for 90% of all prescriptions written in the U.S.

So what part of that are you blaming the politicians for? Did you expect them to get in the way of the free market and offer tax incentives for domestic production, or maybe even have the government itself produce pharmaceuticals? Do you you even remember the pre-cult days when you pretended to be free market, small government conservatives?

What makes us 'over' reliant on other countries? Is the supply chain inconsistent? Have the plentiful and cheap drugs been used as leverage?

The CPA advocacy group that you linked mentions national security risk a few times, but just like you, they just state it it so, they don't bother to to really make the case. Can you help them?

Thanks for listing the critical items. Not.

What is your vision for a solution to this 'real issue' that has been a total failure? Just follow the cult leader right.

Have you considered the ramifications if we ever find ourselves at war with China and they are one of two countries "increasingly the leading U.S. source for generic pharmaceuticals, which account for 90% of all prescriptions written in the U.S."?

Do you not see that as a national security risk?

What are the ramifications in your hypothetical war with China? Would we import more from India? Would we import more from other countries? Would we use wartime powers and manufacture domestically?

Sounds like something that could increase the price of drugs. Just like you're supporting with this tariff, protectionist stuff.

No, I dont see it as a significant national security risk, but I also am not peeing my pants about a hypothetical war with China.

And yet we're the ones who get painted as the enemies of capitalism...

No country can rival China as a trading partner. They are, without question, the most accomplished manufacturing nation in history. It’s not simply a matter of low costs—China hasn’t been the cheapest option for some time. What truly sets them apart is the scale and sophistication of their engineering capabilities, coupled with a vast and highly skilled workforce. This combination is unmatched anywhere in the world.

It's true, which of course made no sense to target all of their competition with tariffs too. We should be using our collective leverage - traditional allies - to see that sort of manufacturing sophistication exported beyond China's borders. Like you said, it's not just cheap labor.

They should have had the wherewithal to found the nation in the Amazon rainforest.

That would have been easier than the pesky diplomacy that has worked for 100 years.

You seem very concerned about a theoretical issue with healthcare access due to communist China but have shown little concern, based on your posting history, with an actual issue of access to healthcare due to lack of insurance.
