I don't think too many will argue Fant will leave for the NFL, but I am fairly confident they won't have much of a fall off at TE. Hockenson is back and pretty damn good. Wieting is arguably their best blocking TE and will be a Sr. and I think will have a good year. But, I think the biggest reason we won't see much of a drop off is because of Drew Cook. Great size, good speed, great hands and pretty much a Hockenson clone who is finally learning to play with his hand in the dirt and block. I think he will have a break out Sr. year (ala Derby at Arkansas) and will play at a very high level. Plus, Beyer will round things out nicely. Now where a problem could develop is the following year if Hockenson leaves early for the NFL. They would lose 3 of the top 4 TE's and Beyer will be counted on heavily with just a few walk-ons and a pair of RS freshmen to help him. Now, I think those 2 RS freshmen will be pretty dang good at some point, but it might be a lot to ask of them. They'll need to work damn hard their freshmen year to get up to speed.

I think at this point only a late season injury would keep Fany out of the NFL draft where he would be coveted.

I also share the OP's enthusiasm about the TE position at Iowa going forward.

Hock's only a soph, doubt he'll leave this early especially when he'll be the man at TE as a junior.

We have Lee and Miamen who would be true sophs if Hock does leave after next year and they're both going to be studs. We're fine at TE for the next several years.

When did we see this on the Cook kid it's probably true but I miss it when he showed all this.

Gotta love that we are talking about two TE positions. I like it. Writing is on the wall for where it can take a recruit. Should be a coveted offer.

I admittedly do not know much about Cook so far, but I'd surely love to see him break out next year.

I think Beyer has the speed to keep those flex TE plays in the rotation, although I'm sure he won't replicate Fant's production.

And it goes without saying Hockenson is a freaking stud.

I'm excited.

If Fant goes and he most likely will, I think Hock might go as well too they have the advantage this year of having one another while a D may be able to take one away they can’t take away both.. its pick your poison right now! Ride that out to have a great 3rd year for them both.. that being said i would not be surprised if Hock goes out and starts making money.. I don’t think any one here doesn’t think he’s ready.. Hell, a good amount think he’s a better TE than Fant.. Iowa might be looking at unleashing two fresh TE’s on the B1G..

Why wouldn't they be redshirt freshmen as opposed to true sophs? Do you think they are going to burn their redshirts?

Best thing is, our OL will be much better as well as the receivers and backs, we won't need to rely on the TEs as much next year.

We'll see what Beyers capabilities and feel for the game are next year. I know he has the athletic ability to be a good receiver at TE. I foresee Lee and Miamen getting reps and if one proves to be ready and productive they may play more than 4 games. I'm hoping our current depth lets them both redshirt.

It depends on what is more valuable to the NFL. Do they want a very good receiving TE, who can block well? Or do they want a great receiving TE, who is average at best at blocking?

I think they are both wanted by the NFL. And probably both gone.

NOW, if we had any good WRs playing now, they could both very well be playing for the Hawks next year....

Here is to Iowa getting some good WRs soon!! We will always have good-to-great TEs.

He Redshirted and not eligible for the NFL.
I thought they could declare for NFL as long as they are three years out of high school, irregrdless if they redshirted or not.

can anyone confirm or deny that? reason I keep asking is because obviously, I want him back in 2019.

Also, Hockenson is arguably Stanley's favorite target. I'd foresee Hock remaining AT LEAST through the '19 season. After that ... who knows?

Given the huge wave of departures at TE after the '19 season ... I'm 100% certain that AT LEAST one of the new TEs plays as a TR FR in '19. Also, the other guy likely gets the full 4 games of playing ... that is, assuming he earns it.

After the '19 season, the Hawks will definitely be losing Cook and Wieting to graduation ... and they very well could be losing Hock as an early entry to the NFL. After those guys ... the only guy we return who has earned snaps is Beyer.

Thus, you better believe that we'll need young blood to have some experience heading into the '20 season!

With Cook and Beyer in between.

Can you all tell me a little more about Beyer? I thought Weiting has been on the field more.

Just for sake of speculation, if the hawks are without Fant and Hock, what does our 2 and 3 TE formations look like? Who's our next best pass-catching option? Is it Beyer? I thought Drew Cook was supposed to be really athletic, but I haven't seen him on the field much. Who's our best blocking TE in waiting?

I'm very curious what the Hawks will look like offensively if they go without Fant & Hock next season. Can any of the other TEs stretch the field?

Really? So they are going to bench Hockenson, Wieting, Beyer and Cook and play true freshmen? That's not the way it works. They don't groom kids during games, they groom them in practice. No, it is very unlikely that they would play barring injuries, departures or blowouts. Neither of the incoming freshmen will 'beat out' any of those 4. Sorry.

Beyer came in as a WR/TE tweener and reportedly has very good speed. I would say that is the reason for comparison to Fant and predictions of a Flex TE.

I honestly don't know much about Cook's athletic or blocking ability, so I can't say much comparing the two.

Weiting is an in-line TE blocking specialist, so while both TE's, he and Beyer won't be used in the same way.

From what I've heard and from what I saw in the spring and fall games Cook doesn't drop anything, and made a very difficult catch in the spring game. He's up to 250 so he's got the size and strength now to be an effective blocker. In fact when Fant went out of the game against Minny, they put Cook in and he was in for their heavy package (all the rest were regular starters) and he drove the LB 3 yds. out creating the hole for the TD run. Like I keep saying, Cook is going to be a surprise to some and have a big senior year. That's my prediction.

I think the continued improvement in our wide outs & running game offset the impact of losing Fant (in regards to Hockenson's performance next year).

Form a Iowa fans stand point I would like to see both Fant and Hock stay another year but i would not be surprised at all to see both go, especially with the year and notoriety the Hock is putting together.. last year this time I would have said Hock sticks around but now not so much.. For Hawks sake I Hope the WR’s continue to improve because like I previously said I would not be surprised if Hock goes to the NFL.. if he continues at the level he’s playing at, why would he stay?
