Team played better with no Patrick

Start your five and if you aren’t going to play defense and rebound then you will be subbed out. Same goes for the non starters and we all know what we saw from him throughout the year. He has a propensity to not defend or rebound on both ends of the court. Same rules apply to everyone but he needs to give more effort in his defending and rebounding. If you can’t do those two things then you shouldn’t see the floor.

One thing I found hilarious vs OSU. Ulis had to come out early and instead of inserting the conference 6th man of the year in with Sandfort Fran put Patrick in first. Just shook my head in disbelief. Yes he had a good game vs Nebraska (after plenty of clunkers) but Sandfort has been way more consistent and efficient all season long in conference play.

"Sandfort has been way more consistent and efficient all season long" - does that not include starting 0 for 19?

And still ending up the 6th man of the year in the Big Ten? OP is absolutely right. Auburn has a couple of big at 6-10 and 6-8 but then plays a 3 guard lineup. If Patrick ends up playing 22-24 minutes I do not like our chances. While Sandfort isn't a great defender either, he at least tries. Dix isn't going to get much time. The defensive lineup of Connor at the point and Patrick guarding anybody is an absolute net negative. I want more minutes for Ulis. Someone who can at least pressure and guard the other teams pt guard.

I don’t like Patrick getting all those minutes over Sanford and Dix. Rotation was much better minus Patrick. He should only get 6-8 min unless having a great shooting day. If so, play him for Connor not both on floor!
I agree there is a much better flow at both ends, Sanford gets more touches, rebounds better, and plays better D.

I've never heard of this guy. Seems a bit old to be playing college basketball.

You talking the stretch where we won 4 in a row ( 3 at home ) then went on the road and lost to tOSU and MSU without Patrick? That stretch? Then we came back home and won 3 in a row with Patrick playing. So the common denominator was playing at home not really Patrick...

Unfortunately, the rule is no one is penalized playing time for bad defense, only thing that gets one benched is turnovers.

Anyone who doesn't think there's some favoritism is willfully ignorant.

I see we’ve come full circle on Connor. He played pretty poorly coming off of that injury(STOP PLAYING CONNOR)then hit that hit shooting streak to end the year(WE LOVE CONNOR) Started off this year playing well(WE STILL LOVE CONNOR) but his shooting hit the skids to end the year(NEPOTISM).

One thing I’ll agree with is playing Connor and Pat together isn’t a good idea. They are both ball stoppers. Throw Rebraca in there as well and the offensive flow stalls out.

Perkins, Kris, and Sandfort should be your 30+ minutes guys. The other minutes should be distributed on a game by game basis depending on matchups and how well that player is playing that particular night.

The thing I don’t understand is why we’ve tried to run the offense through Connor the last couple of games. This offense is predicated on ball movement and flow. Connor, while a good passer, just stands there with the ball way too long waiting for other players to get open. Love the ball, god damn it. That’s when Iowa is at their best.

Agree. People need to stop whining about defense. This Iowa team doesn't have it on D, you'd think they would figure that out by now.

Can't let a team like Ohio State shoot more threes. The Hawks win by offense & offense only. The last thing they need is to pass it to a wide open guy who holds the ball, which allows the defense to recover. Toussaint did it last year. C. McCaffery does it this year.

I would like to see a lineup of Perkins/Dix/Sandfort/P. McCaffery/Murray for a few minutes vs Auburn but doubt that happens.

I Think you nailed it!!

Connor is probably the best passer on this team. He also plays defense. Patrick has had a tough year but you guys are a bit off on your Sandfort love, methinks......"infatuated" even......

Ehhh, I wouldn’t say infatuated but if Iowa truly wants the best possible offensive team on the floor then you’re looking at Perkins Sandfort Pat Murray and Rebraca.

I would agree with Dix getting more minutes. Doesn't seem overwhelmed by the upgrade in competition. I think he has a nice future with the Hawks.
Dix has a good future, but he was a liability against OSU. Hopefully, he and Bowen have a good off-season and build some strength for next year.

and then when they make a basket what do they do? The game of basketball is a three part game....offense, defense and free throws....You want to make it all offense....defense and free throws is what wins you games.

Not sure why you’re arguing with me about it. Iowa’s defense has always pretty much always sucked under Fran, save a few years when Woody/Mike et al were around. It’s a systemic issue more than anything

I think the issue with Pmac is yes he can score (sometimes), but generally he’s a really poor rebounder and defender and steals-getter and slow to get to loose balls. Aka the things that win ball games. So when he scores a lot, he generally plays more minutes. But one could argue if he scores 20 points, we would have scored 16-18 without him (meaning someone individually or team collectively would have scored on those possessions too). But now he’s playing extended minutes “because he’s playing well on offense” but we lose out on the rest of the things that matter. He’s not physical on defense. He’s not able to make the hustle plays (50/50 loose balls). He’s not grabbing that extra rebound (like Sandfort does). He’s not making the creative pass (like Sandfort does).

Unless the other team has a near mirror image of his skill set to guard, he’s typically a mismatch for us when playing defense. Can’t guard the more physical big guys. Can’t stay with the quicker small guys. Slow to rotate in zone.

Comparing just the two players, I don’t know what Pmac does better than Sandfort. On top of that I think Sandfort is quite scrappy, physical, and aggressive.

The last few games if you rewatched them you'd see he is actually boxing out and is giving much better effort on defense. I like Pmac but trust Sandfort to play better offense more often. Sandfort also plays hard on defense. Unfortunately they both can be beat like any player. My main beef with the Nebraska game was rotation to the corners in the zone. They weren't and it cost us dearly. Those wide open easy 3's were the difference in the game. In the tournament i saw Patrick get shoved by sensabaugh who got the rebound and Patrick still got crap about not getting the rebound. If Sandfort is hitting play him. If he's not and Pmac is hitting play him. They are both giving good effort on defense and rebounding. Sandfort is just so much stronger but saying Pmac isn't playing hard isn't true. The team needs both these guys. And Connor as well. There isn't a player getting minutes that isn't important to this team. As long as they don't disappear. Perkins needs to be aggressive, uhlis needs to drive and so does Connor. And everyone needs to get their heads in the game and not zone out like we've seen.
