I was listening to
Terry Brands joins Mat Chat with David Mirikitani

http://s200.trackwrestling.com/tw/P...twSessionId=awzhskinzsrmihn&videoId=262353076

(start talking about head coaching around the 54:00 mark)

I have been under the impression that Terry may be satisfied to be in his current role. This interview seemed to suggest that he would be interested in head coaching if it was the right opportunity. It seemed like he would have been interested in the Oklahoma job.

After listening to that, I now think maybe he would have wanted the Minnesota job if it would have been open. Would he want the Iowa State job? Pitt? What type of things do you think he would be looking for in a head coaching position?

Either ISU or Pitt would be VERY interesting from a recruiting standpoint.

Terry coaching at ISU would create a ton of excitement for wrestling! I would hate to see him go, but man would it be interesting!

Terry has a ton to offer at most any school. I would imagine he has learned a lot bout the importance of recruiting at any college. You need recruiting and ISU would be a slower process than the The Pitt job. I'm thinking Iowa may even be able to expand it's horizons with a really good 197- 165 type coach. We do really well at the lower weights for good reasons.

I would think if Terry would leave Metcalf would come in and then when Tom leaves he would take over.
With Lee coming I don't see Terry leaving for at least 5 years..

Many of you attend practices first hand. Is Terry as hands on/physically involved on the mat as the few videos and articles I have read seem to indicate? If so, considering how difficult it is to do that while managing everything else a HC is responsible for, could/would he really want to make the changes necessary to be a HC?

Also, I remember reading that the above is the exact reason he went away from Head Coaching. The political aspect seemed to drain on him significantly.

Terry is just as involved as both Tom and Dan are/were.

Believe me, I have no doubt he could be a great HC. I just question whether he wants those specific responsibilities and, with Nelson coming up soon, would he want to sacrifice some of the 1 on 1 time he is currently able to provide?

From the interview, it sounds to me like he would be interested in the responsibilities. Before hearing the interview I was leaning towards he may not want to be a HC. Earlier in the interview he mentioned Tom having the final say on decisions. Maybe he still has a desire to be the Alpha dog even if that means doing some things that he doesn't enjoy quite as much.

I hope he doesn't go to Pitt or anywhere else for that matter. I like the PA pipeline we are building. I know everyone is ready to be back on top and that will help tremendously.

This is probably an accurate statement. And if true, 5 years from now does a 55-year-old Terry Brands have the same recruiting fire for HS aged kids? It seems a lot of programs are looking to get young, fresh talent. I hope other programs think that way so he stays right where he is. That would be tough to watch Terry and Tom coach against each other. But I agree it'd interesting.

I would like to see him go to Pitt. I doubt it would affect Iowa that much, but it certainly could hurt PSU.
And since Carl is second fiddle to a Brands for in-State recruiting... Carl heads to another destination... perhaps North Dakota State.

Wonder if it might be contract renewal time for Terry?
Sounds Good to me let's up HC and AHC pay.

As cool as some of it would be and I would totally have a second team to cheer for behind Iowa.... I don't want to see it. I like this set up and feel we need them both and are moving in the right direction as things are now.

Two things. One, the biggest reason why Lee is coming to Iowa is Terry Brands. Lee loves him. He mentioned that as being the number one reason he is coming. If Terry leaves I believe that Spencer would follow him. Secondly, Pollard went to Terry's house and asked Terry if he would be interested in coming to ISU before Jackson got there. Pollard didn't get through the door. There is little chance that Terry would go there and even less of a chance if Pollard is still there.

Terry could have left many times for a head coaching job...I believe he makes as much as most head coaches at Iowa and he is the associate head coach....I think if Terry goes anywhere would be to the OTC....but what do I know

Hold on. Pollard just shows up at his house? No way do I buy that.

Cael recruits nationally and gets his pick from PA (S Lee is noted exception). Terry would not impact PSU, but some of that Iowa bound PA talent might find its way to Pitt.
If Terry could get the goofy Pitt administration to buy in and support the program fully - then Terry would do exceptionally well at Pitt. In recent years the kids from the Pittsburgh area who weren't being selected to be part of the Penn State program have been going everywhere else, but Pitt to wrestle. Terry would give those kids another high quality local option.

So, I went to Terry's house last night to find out. ... and got my ass kicked .... by Nelson.

He is staying and Nelson is coming to Iowa. Hope they do not recognize me in the stands this weekend.

Kind of hard not to with all the bandages and the sling

I heard just the opposite from a solid source. I heard that Terry accepted the job, then backed out.

I thought the story was Terry went to Ames for an interview (before KJ) but couldn't force himself out the car door for the interview.
