It is ironic Iowa, having 17 years of non-winning seasons, played Indiana, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa State to kickoff the new era, that first season of J Hayden Fry.
Indiana and Oklahoma each opened their seasons with Iowa back in 1979.
Now 42 years later, Iowa opens again with IU again in Kinnick.
Iowa never got a return date at Kinnick from the Sooner. Iowa is 0-2 now against OU.
Iowa is set to play 4 pre-season Top 20 programs in 2021. As we can see, a similar number were played back in 1979.
Iowa lost 21-6 in the Week 2 of 1979, but it was a 7-6 game for three quarters down in Norman. Iowa lead 6-0 briefly. TV wasn't there, but you could have heard in on one of the Iowa radio broadcasts, before Learfield changed that landscape.

At Kinnick, in Week 1, #17 Indiana will be Iowa's B1G opener. The first in a full season, since that inaugural Hayden Fry season.
Iowa got off to a great start back in 1979 in that home opener. Like last year's Northwestern game, the Hawkeyes really came to play for one half and couldn't close it out after a big first half lead.
