I know this has been the subject of a number of threads, but I'll bring it up again.

After watching Plummer on Illinois scorch us, you have to wonder why Iowa didn't go to the portal for ANY serviceable player.
Plummer is a grad transfer and starts for the Illini.
Grandison is also a grad transfer!

Does anyone think Ash will see the floor the REST of the season?

There was NO ONE out there that we could have rented for a year?

I'm sure it is a nice gesture of Fran's but you have to wonder.....

If I’m not mistaken players cannot simply be kidnapped and told they are playing for such and such team. I believe the player has to consent to being at said school.

I don’t know all the rules, but I believe it is a two-way commitment.

I've got no problems with Rebraca. And yes, he is serviceable.

But why not USE the final schollie?

If someone gave us 3 minutes a game, it would be more that Ash will.
Because team chemistry matters. After Fran got Rebraca he felt good about his team and starters - and where the minutes would shake out. He didn’t want to add a transfer that was going to expect 20+ minutes

So one of the gripes I’ve heard over and over again is that Fran plays too many players. Now we need more players so Fran can have a bigger rotation? Makes sense.

Fran has never understood how to manage a roster. He wasted a year of Kris Murray last year despite multiple guys playing dinged up. Kris could have helped on both ends last year no question. He loses Garza and Nunge and his best portal get is Rebraca. He could have told Mulvey to wait a year, but instead, he reclassified so he can sit on the bench. Josh shows promise, but why didn't Fran get him more PT in the blowout wins vs. 2 minutes of garbage time with Ash and the walkons? The portal was full of guys that could be contributing, but Fran doesn't like the mercenary players because they will disrupt the "chemistry".

Fran will never see the Sweet 16 regardless of how long he stays.

Because Fran is one of those coaches that doesn't what to upset his roster players by recruiting over them. Underwood on the other hand, doesn't care about hurt feelings, he looks for players that will help them win a conference title or NCAA tournament games. Fran is loyal to the players on his roster and because of that, you get what Iowa is. Not ready for prime time. Missed free throws and slow to the ball on rebounds.
I'm telling you right now if Keegan leaves Iowa after this year, Fran will never get Iowa to finish higher then 4the in the BIG.
They've dug themselves a hole that they may not recover from, there's 18 more games but how many of those will Iowa fall behind and have to claw their way out of it only to fall short. Fran and his staff are not known to be great tacticians. That won't change anytime soon...

You can bring a transfer in to recruit over a guy who is not as good too. Does not always have to be just a rotation guy. You can bring a player in who completely pushes another out of the rotation. Fran is loyal to guys. But you don't always have to be nice in big boy basketball. He has his morals and what he stands for. Can't blame him for staying true to what he believes. But it's also hurting him and the team some what in the long run.

Tape went to San Francisco, Samuel went to Florida Gulf Coast. I can't see why either of those 2 would have been hard to get.
The tale of "the (Patrick) Tape" shows him to be averaging 3.9 ppg, 4.2 reb, 0.4 blocks, 0.7 steals, and 1.7 assists for the University of San Francisco. I'll take Rebraca over him.

Now, I will grant you that Kevin Samuel is bigger (6'11" and 255 lbs) and having a better statistical season at Florida Gulf Coast than Rebraca (10.3 ppg, 8.7 reb, 3.0 blocks). However, Samuel is from Antigua and Barbuda, went to high school in Houston, spent 3 years at Texas Christian. What makes you think Iowa was on his radar? He actually entered his name into the 2021 NBA draft, but then withdrew. He didn't sign with FGCU until June 22nd, whereas Rebraca committed to Iowa in April.

Iowa State is a top 20 team with a new coach and a completely overhauled roster via the portal. They have a better shot of making the Sweet 16 than Fran ever will. But yeah, Fran thought Rebraca is all we needed to compete. Entertaining to watch in losses, but it's still a loss.

And this is the reason I am not a Fran supporter anymore. You can turn and change a basketball roster for the positive in about a season and a half. The really good coaches can do it in less time than that. Look at what ISU is doing and then realize that Fran has been here for 11 years and our fans still love him. He had his time to take this up a notch and can't and won't.

Ames must be a helluva town if ISU football and basketball can constantly bring in transfers and, in terms of basketball, turn a team that went winless in the Big 12 last year into a top twenty team in a matter of months.
Interesting, wouldn't you say?

Iowa needn't go all Ames, but using the portal and going after suitable transfers to upgrade the football or basketball program is simply common sense.

And I would have to agree that it's pretty crazy to think the best player available for that last scholarship was Mr. Ash.

Rebraca transfer announced April 2021, Plummer transfer announced April 2021. Ash scholarship announced May 2021.

My guess is anybody else they may have wanted for this year was already going somewhere else.

Wasn't Ash I'm the portal until he got the scholarship offer?
Yes but it wasn't until after other options went elsewhere like the center from Minnesota. So if there are no other big man options, why not reward the kid?
